With the amount of time/money/face they lost over it.. I'm thinking it is a
sure sign that it is for real.. not that I've tried it myself.. Kryptonite
didn't simply disregard the issue...

We rocked up at 10am to Cecil, to be told the guy had been involved in a car
accident.. and he will be in at 12:30.... a mighty fine day to kill time in
the city, we went to the movies... back to Cess at 12:30....only to be told
because we didn't have the keys that we wouldn't get a replacement.. I
almost pointed out the irony in needing the keys... they said we could come
back anytime in the next three months for a replacement if we found the
keys..

Got home, found the keys, called Cess - they said come in, we did on
Monday - only to be told they couldn't replace it because they didn't have
the replacement locks... bloody shambles.. all for some dodgy fuskin lock..

Maybe you could've bought a bic from a newsagent and claimed that as the key
:-)

Apparently a lot of the replacement locks don't work properly. The key can't
be removed when it is locked. Only hearsay, they didn't have model in stock
to replace mine.

15% off any stock was a nice gesture from CW.

The BIC pen trick was demonstrated on G4TechTV's "Unscrewed with Martin
Sargent" last year.

Kryptonite changed the lock-end of the U-shaped piece.

Old locks had a ring cut-out forged into the end, all the way around. New locks have a tooth cut out of the inside edge of the bar. The replacement crossbars wont lock on the old-style U-bars.

Speaking to my LBSG about Kryptonite locks yesterday. After hearing all
the rumours on how people broke through them, they went down to the
engineering and physics workshop and got the guys to do everything they
could to open them. Including liquid nitrogen down the lock to try to
make it brittle. Nothing. Apparently they broke their bolt cutters too,
but managed to get into an inferior brand? I thought it was nice that
the LBSG cared.

Definitely not a hoax...
I couldn't find a bic pen that would fit the barrel on my U-lock, but
I was able to open it successfully using a piece of thickish card rolled
into a small tube.

Took a few goes to get the technique but then was pretty easy.
Worked also on some other barrel locks on cabinets and the like that
I've access to.
