i do not/will not lean over on handlebars. my wrists/neck can't take it for more than 5 minutes. i understand that sitting more upright like on a comfort bike is not the norm for a mountain bike - so what. that is what i will do. i have looked around at several bike shops and have not seen anything remotely close to being what i would consider acceptible. a 'riser' to the mountainbike crowd is something that goes up about 2". i am looking for something more like 12".
does anybody know of a brand that makes these? i may look like a total geek with them and my shock absorber stem, but i will be a COMFORTABLE geek!

umm, your probably not going to find bars like that.. some suggestions though...
if you find you need it really high, get an extender, they clamp onoto the steerer tube (im assuming you have a normal a-heat 1 1/8" steerer) like a stem does and then you clamp your stem onto this to make it higher.
get a short stem with alot of rise
and the biggest rise bars you can find - 2" is quite a bit of rise
move your seat forward a bit if you can and if that helps at all

Why not get the 2" riser bars but get a stem with a higher angle. This should give you the more upright position you need. I don't know all the brands of stems out there but as an example of one try this link -

They have a couple of models with high angles, one of which is adjustable. I'm sure other manufacturers have similar models. Also maybe consider the length of the stem; the shorter it is the closer you would be to the bars and the more upright I imagine you would be. Mind it doesn't feel too cramped though.
