    A very good point. My last bike had a mystery creak that persisted even after a complete strip and rebuild. Took it to LBS and the guy told me a little known fact. Put a dab of oil everywhere your outer cables make contact with the frame. Sometimes when you're riding along, they'll be ever so slightly scraping the frame and that causes a bit of squeaking.
