Rewind to Sunday.
5:00 - wake up crazy early
light breakfast: banana, toast/jam/almond butter, coffee
7:45 - 1 serving Accelerade before race
8:00-9:44 - race half marathon
moderately hilly
all pavement all the time
light flats
75-80 degrees, not crazy hot
1 succeed salt cap, 1 CarbBoom gel, water, few sids G'rade
9:44-10:00 - walking/eating/drinking cooldown
1 serving Endurox, 2 bananas, few sips G'rade endurance formula
10:00-10:45 - moderate stretching as it heated up toward 90+F
11:00 - a clif bar and water on the train home
12:30 - shower, apply Absorbine Jr to quads/hams/calves, nap
13:30 - wake up, move leg, get horrible intense calf cramp
14:30 - good burger & fries & ice cream sundae at ~100 year old soda
fountain; didn't do much for the calf but this rare indulgence made
the rest of me feel better
Once in a blue moon I'll get a calf cramp - I think it's been about a
year since the last. I also think I used to get them (and/or foot
cramps) occasionally for years, since long before I started running.
Sunday's was the worst ever: searing pain at the time, limped the rest
of the day. I dunno if that's because my muscles were pretty beat up
by the race (I was/am still surprisingly sore today - hams & quads in
particular - after two nights of sleep, a massage, rest, and finally
3.5 mi slow jog this evening) or because my calves are bigger and
badder than ever (using them more due to landing further forefoot?
higher mileage? flatter shoes?).
So who else gets calf cramps? Better yet, anyone solved them & no
longer suffer them? Anybody with some science or folklore or personal
experience or wild guesses as to what I did to provoke the cramp, or
might try to prevent the next one? This is a pain I could really do
without: thanks for any help.
