Saw ten seconds of this, they have some sort of sport task and included is cycling but the 'bike they used had knobbly tyres, suspension front forks and a very small frame a la cheap fashion 'bikes but it had drop handlebars did anyone else see this and recognise the rationale behind this. Of course knowing me this might be a specialist "fit" and I am out of the loop. The course seemed to be a 10 metre diameter circle so they didn't get above 7~8 mph (guess) but they had "aerodynamic" h*lm*ts on, which didn't look especially cheap, so very expensive h*lm*ts cycling shirts ,shorts etc and yet thet had what seemed "cheapo" bikes,am really confused. -- yours S

Could the reason for your confusion be your expectation that Big Brother is good?

Could the reason for your confusion be your expectation that Big Brother is good?
Don't (and have never thought ) BB was any good. Don't even usualy watch it just caught ten seconds or so of it this morning whilst I was "flipping" through the channels, saw they were on 'bikes so decided to watch for a bit, saw/realised how short the course was and continued on my way. here is a list of reasons which could be the answer: 1) they know that they are a bunch of idiots and it would get destroyed 2)they wanted them to look stupid on a mountain bike with drop handle bars 3)they wanted to make it as difficult as possible?

Applying Hanlon's Razor, I'd guess they had planed the event, laid in a stock of Sterling House solid neutronium mountain bikes. A producer type then caught a glimpse of a TT stage out of the corner of their eye and decided it would be "cool" to dress these bikes (and riders) up like the ones on the Tour.

I understand that the people behind BB are organising a party for the media, various hangers on and presumably themselves and want goods (free, natch) to put into goodie bags for guests. The donors get listed on a suppliers' page on the BB site.

Having now watched some of the BB olympics (only by accident because my finger slipped on the remote, you understand) it looks like the bikes were small (likewise the track) for 'comic effect'. Helmets probably there as a result of a combination of comic effect, and the over safety consciousness that had them wearing knee and elbow pads while they cycled.
I do know the result of both the BB time trial and the overall competition but as this subject line doesn't have 'spoiler' in it, I'd better not mention it.

The little bikes they have actually look OK for the absurdly small circuit. Having a "good" bike wouldn't help much.
