How much difference is there in road traction between completely slick tires (which I have at the moment) and tires that have at least some sort of grip pattern on them (we're talking about road tyres).

The slick tyres will have a greater contact area with the road than ones with a marked tread; whether this translates to greater grip depends on the precise nature of the road surface. Rolling resistance is usually a bigger factor than grip or traction in determining tread patterns.
