A friend recently started rehabbing her knee after major surgery and needs some easy gears for climbing. She has a road bike with Ksyrium Elites. We replaced the Ultegra RD with an XT, which worked fine. But when we tried putting a mountain cassette on the Ksyrium rear wheel, there was a lot of play between some of the cogs, even when the lock ring was properly tightened. I presume there is some sort of incompatibility between the Mavic freehub and certain cassettes. Can someone clarify what's going on, and is it possible to replace the Ksyrium freehub with, say, a Shimano freehub that will give her more cassette options? Thanks.

Are you sure that you have all the necessary spacers in place?

Was her wheel Campy or Shimano? If it's already Big S-compatible, then you either left off a spacer or have the wrong number of cogs (9 speed mt. v 10 speed road? Or 8/9???). If it was Campy, then a Shimano cassette won't work.

Must have a spacer onto the freehub before the cogset. Standard for Ksyrium shimano based cogsets. Add a 2mm spacer, like a spare cassette spacer and it will tighten no problema.
