I am having an internal debate with myself about how much advantage I would get -- when climbing hills -- if I change my rear cog from 11/23 to 12/27.
Has anyone who has done this, or known someone who has done this share their experience.
MOST of the time the hills are short (.5 miles or less) and pitched upto 8%, with a few as steep as 15%.

I think it's worth doing. You ain't me and YMMV. The alternatives are a compact crank or a granny ring. Make sure the chain is long enough for the bib/big if you do go with a 27.

The change in gearing is about 15%, I don't know how else to answer the question... for the same cadence you will go 15% slower, and it will be ~15% easier. 😕

I made the change and it's a very noticable difference. If most of your hills are less than .5 miles, then I don't know that I'd bother. I normally ride my 12/25 for all around use, including those short 15%'s. I put the 12/27 on when I'm going to be doing 10,000'+ in a day. To answer your question, yes you will get an advantage, if you're looking to spin easier up the hills.
