You're spot on.
Psychology plays a massive part in cycling,whether its the Tour or
just a Sunday morning club run.Vino seems to have the drive and
personal belief found in the young Lance Armstrong.
The rest seem to be psyched out,not just by 'Tex' Armstrong's personal
prowess but also that of his team.
Consider how football teams feel approaching a Chelsea or Arsenal
fixture.They're beaten before they step foot on the pitch.
Sadly,the same seems to be true of many Tour hopefuls.

One of the intriguing aspects of the psychology of sportsmen(and

A football team's league form may differ wildly from their cup form,as
they separate the two in terms of prestige or attainability.
The example you provided,Liverpool,showed this last season.
They won the European Cup,but finished a disappointing 5th in the
domestic league competition.
So it would not be unreasonable to conclude that whilst they might be
'beaten before they step foot on the pitch' in a fixture with
Arsenal,they would be confident of a good result against a Contintal
side.
