Thank christ I slept in today, as I was heading down that way on the tube around that time. Happy that the Heathrow express is still running, so I don't go bankrupt shelling money over for a taxi

I couldn't help but notice how many people are affected by the public
transport system in London. If they bombed the trains in Brisbane, about
30 people would be inconvenienced, and think the lack of the next train
arriving was nothing to be concerned about, it happens all the time.

To get that sort of effect in Brisbane, you'd have to blow up all the
freeways.

I hope that those of you with friends and family in the UK have
successfully made contact with them. I couldn't help but think, Thank
fsck that didn't happen earlier... Hippy was there a few weeks back!

London - Bicycle stores in Central London reported brisk sales on Thursday as commuters in the capital sought alternative methods of transport, after the suspected terrorist attacks on the city's public transport system.

With taxis in short supply and services canceled on both London's underground railway system and its central bus network, commuters are flocking to the city's bike shops in an effort to get home.

"We've sold a hell of a lot of bikes today," said the manager of Evans Cycles in central London.

"People are coming in and buying bikes because they can't get home today."

Another of the capital's bike shops reported similar sales.

"We're getting a lot of calls asking what are our cheapest bikes but we've actually sold out of them," said the manager of Condor Cycles.

The manager confirmed he had sold about 15 of these bikes by early afternoon.

Being central London, the lowest priced bikes at these shops were between £200 and £250.

Quick-thinking commuters saved themselves some cash by visiting bicycle hire shops, though by Thursday afternoon they were out of luck.

"We're all out," said an employee at On Your Bike, a cycle sales and rental shop near London Bridge.

"We've actually built extra bikes to cater for the demand but they're all gone too."

I'd love to agree but I think it will be a little different.

Specifically while we might not like the PIRA, the Irish are still "us"
to many people (white) while the arabian people are definately a "them".
The Irish follow a religion we understand but most people don't
understand Islam and too few even realise that these so called
"muslims" are breaching the tenets of their faith just as radical
catholics and protestants did in Ireland.

Overall I hold little hope that there won't be so silly viciousness
towards muslims either in the UK or here.

This sort of thing sickens me. I've been lucky enough to use my skills
in some places where people sought revenge for old wrongs (Kosovo, East
Timor) and the one thing I took away from that was how similar "normal"
people were regardless of language, religion or origin.

I'm staying at University House at ANU at present and I have been having breakfast in the dining room every morning with various uni academics, postgrad students etc who seem to be from all points of the globe. This morning everyone was quieter than usual having heard the London news. Looking even more upset than most was a group of Islamic men and women. These acts of violence, claimed to be in the name of Islam, hurt more people than the ones who are targetted.

It can only be said that these violent acts of terrorism can not be justified in any way.
