I watched the post race interview with Armstrong on French TV. Armstrong said he hit a musette of a spectator and it destabalised him causing his crash. He said it was his fault, the spectator was well back and he cut the corner as the wind flipped the obstacle. He said he pulled his foot out subsequently due to a gear problem - probably affected by the crash. He seemed to be unaware at that point that anyone had waited for him and said he was running on adrenaline after the crash but had planned (as he said yesterday) to attack on the Ardiden climb. He apologised to the specator and to Mayo who he brought down and nearly took off a second time.

Armstrong was aware that Ullrich didn't attack when he crashed, saying "the fact of the matter is that I did the same two years ago on the descent of the Col de Peyresourd.... ....what goes around comes around, so I'm very grateful to Jan for remembering my gesture two years ago."
