whilst my cheap impulse buy - a raleigh pioneer 120 does the job at the moment it only has 6 gears - the frames the right size for me and generally fits well
would a lbs be able to replace the front chainset to give me say 2 rings to give me a 12 gear setup ... would it be worthwhile/ecoonmic or even give me what im after - see below?
my top gear when im motoring along on a flat feels as though i could handle another 2 or maybe 3 gears above it and when going uphill i could do with a gear or two below my easiest gear (ive probably got my tops/bottoms mixed up here too!) but either way i could do with some easier and harder gears ...

You can do it yourself if you have the will. Bikes sourced from the local "civic amenity site" (i.e. tip) can provide a useful source of cheap components for such a project.
If you like the frame, don't let anyone tell you it's not worth it. Well, OK, let them tell you, but make up your own mind. I spent more money having my old 531ST tourer rebuilt with 8 speed rear and 700c wheels than most people spend on a new bike, and I've never regretted it.

nope, the will for these sort of projects is long gone ... im not overkeen in having to pump up the tyres so getting my hands real dirty is a definate no no unless i have no choice ... 😉

its not that i like the frame .. just that i bought the bike a couple months ago and it does fit ... also the frame hasnt snapped like a twig with my substantial load too which is good !
just not sure if these sort of adjustments are possible or economic to do considering i only paid £120 for the bike new from halfords ... although i think the improved gearing would make my time with this bike far longer as so far its the only thing i have issue with
Be careful scouraging through official tips. The rubbish is not free to take and doing so would most likely be theft. People pay to have rights to sift through rubbish so no one is going to take kindly to you maybe denying them of some treasure.
Bike upgrading can be fun and educational but at the same time frustrating when you sheer a nut seized nut or something, skin your knuckles or accidently stab yourself when something slips. Be careful, salute to safety.

I'm doing a refit of a fifteen year old Peugeot (that cost £100 in Halfords, back then, as it happens). Suits me, but you should really consider buying the bike you want and selling the present one, or buying a bike with all the (compatible!) bits you want and transferring them to your present frame, then selling off the unwanted frame and bits. At the cheap end of the market (say £300) the package is very hard to beat. Bits mount up quick. The only reason I haven't done this is I want some non-standard pieces ... like extra strong wheels.
