A lorry driver tried to frighten the [censored] out of me about two months ago (60MPH @ less than a foot away). - This was the last straw after many years of cycling to work. - Having being knocked off my bike in the past, having at least three other close calls, and suffering altercations with car drivers and pedestrians on shared paths, putting up with bad road conditions, etc; I called it a day. After much thought and upset I decided to drive to work.
Please reconsider this - is there another route you can take? Perhaps you need to think about your riding style (primary position etc)? It makes to sad to hear you gave up commuting by bike.

There's not an alternative (safer) route. I've thought about many things over the years: / routes / riding position / lights / bright clothes / arguing with drivers / turning the other cheek, etc.
I was upset by the decision. - I may cycle to work again, but attitudes to cycling will have to change (including the possibility of my acceptance of the risk) and / or alternatives routes will have to made available.
I'd like to see petrol at £10+ a gallon! That will change attitudes!

More cyclists. More awareness of cyclists and their needs. More pressure on local authorities to provide a road infrastructure that is safer for use by cyclists, etc.
