I have a Michelin Axial Pro tire that I've ridden 3 times . . . 2 flats. After the second flat I looked a little harder and found a small pebble embedded in the tread. When I took the pebble out it left a sizable cut/hole in the tread. Of course the hole is not all of the way through the tire or it would already be in the trash, but it is fairly deep and was pushing on the tube hard enough to cause it to flat.
Do you throw a tire away when this happens? Or better yet, what are some guidelines for evaluating when you should toss a tire because of cuts in the tread?
I've got some important road races coming up and it would stink to flat if I kept the same tire and the cut was a problem.

Does the hole go all the way down to the tire cords? Are the cords damaged? If the cords are OK, I would just fill the hole with shoe repair glue (e.g., ShooGoo).

Have you tried this successfully? I tried it once, the Shoe Goo formed a bump which nibbled the tube.

Wierd. I'm surprised a pebble could cause a flat without actually touching the tube. Are you sure there isn't a fine slit in the tire that's chewing on the tube? What does the hole in the tube look like (pin-[censored], slit, abrasion, etc)?

Most of the time when I find something piercing the tread it's just something sharp like a thorn or a chunk of glass and i pull it out and keep riding. I tend to toss out the tire when I have a 3" x 1/2" strip of yellow gum showing down the middle of the tread.
When I get a bad vertical alsh in my sidewall, i sew it up with fishing line.
When I get a minor sidewall cut, i use a big piece of duct tape inside the tire.

You should _never_ throw away such a tire. Instead, ship them to me, postage paid. I'll be sure they're properly recycled. ;-)
Seriously, it depends on how "sizeable" the cut is. But in most cases, if you don't have a really noticeable bubble in your inflated tire, it's no worry at all.

I've stuffed dollar bills in tires to patch a slit. Eventually I get the dollar back 🙂

If the casing is not cut, just the tread, I keep using the tire. --------------- Alex
