I don't suppose anyone here has been experiencing problems with the 'new' style presta valved innertubes? I bought a load the other day from halfords which supposedly were big enough for 26*1.9 - 2.15 (for a 26*1.9 continental: town and country tyre, which is [censored] by the way, don't buy them), but i have been experiencing problems with them. I brought them from Halfords in a multipack and i could not help but notice that the innertubes were far too small for the tyre but i went ahead and installed them anyway and i have found that everytime i brake remotely hard with the front brake the tyre, innertube and rimtape start to slide over the rim and the valve ends up getting torn off. This has happened to all 3 of the innertubes now within about 300 miles. So i thought "well this is simple, i just wont get them from halfords" so i got one from a brand that i have used before and to my shock realised that they have also gone for an innertube that is far too small for the tyre and the same thing happened. Does anyone know of any brands that still use the larger sized innertubes or does anyone know how i can stop the tyre from sliding around the rim? I am not a competitive rider, it is just for a Giant XTC4 workhorse, so i don't really want anything ultra light or high performance. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated,

I would guess that the problem is with the tire, not the tubes. Are the tires very loose fitting on the rim before you air them up? How much air pressure do you run?

The tyres are not particularly loose fitting, infact they can sometimes be quite difficult to put on, verging on installing 23C road tyres difficulty. I inflate to 50psi front and 60psi rear. I have used my current continentals with an old style, larger tube and i had to replace that because it punctured, that's what prompted me to buy some new ones. The valve shearing off is only a problem i have experienced with the newer ones.

That's surprising! With 50 psi, I can't imagine the tire slipping on the rim. When you inflate any tube outside of the tire, you can see how big it will actually get when not constrained by the wheel/tire.
A thought...maybe the manufacturer mis-marked that lot of tubes. Other than that, I can't come up with a good explanation.

How strange. I recently had the same problem with two Bontrager 26" presta valve tubes. I ran over some glass on my way to work but had forgotten my puncture repair kit. I decided to buy a tube instead but the first attempt saw the valve sliced across the bottom of the valve. I returned it to the store and they kindly replaced it for me without question. However, the second one did the same and I thought it must be the way I was putting it on the rim. Finally, I went to another store and bought an IRC tube (which was cheaper and the only presta tube available at the shop) and that one went on fine. I was a bit disappointed with the Bontragers as they were double the price of the IRC tubes. BTW, I checked both the rim and also turned the tyre inside out and checked it for any other pieces of glass but found nothing.
are your rims drilled fro shrader and if so are you using the spacer to make a good fit through the hole with the smaller presta valve and also hows the rimtape around the valve hole ? it should protect the tube against the edges of the drilled out hole in your rim.
also if the tube is the right diameter then width shouldnt matter too much as long as its not too big, ive used 1.25-1.75" tubes in 2.1" tyres before, makes no difference exceptmthe tube has to strech which isnt ideal because sometimes they can open pores in the tube (no tube is completely sealed) and they will leak air - though very slowly, faster than normal.. but in general as long as it inflates theres probly not a problem with the size of the tube
from what you describe i'd guess your rimtape isnt propperly protecting the tube aorund the drilled hole and possibly that you have shrader drilled rims ?
It is definitely a presta valve rim. I also thought it could be the rim tape because the area where the valve goes through is looking particualrly beaten up and stretched out due to the slippage of 3 innertubes now, but the rimtape looks to be in very good condition otherwise. I have used an IRC torque tube before and that lasted a very long time, i just hope that they are still the larger size. I'll get some new rimtape as well, just to make sure 🙂 . If all else fails would lining the rim with chalk or talcum powder or something reduce slippage? Thanks for the advice guys.
