Can anyone help.....I am going camping soon with my son and I want a lightweight waterproof jacket that I can take with me, but it drives me mad when you get a jacket that russles/makes noises as you walk in it - for me it spoils the peace of the countryside. I know this is a longshot, but can anyone recommend a jacket that would not make a noise?? thanks Dee
<g> I know what you mean, being the owner of a Berghaus Trek which uses Gore-Tex Pac-Lite a notoriously crisp packet like material, however I only wear it when it rains and it's superb in every other aspect, so I'm happy with it.
I've no idea of the noise aspect, but removing the Pac-Lite jackets, the usual materials to consider are -
Paramo is the bees knees from the noise perspective - bit pricey but will last years and years - virtually indestructible.
Another good option for less noise is Ventile. Paramo should indeed last for years but "indestructible" depends on use. Do the A-Chir ridge a few times in one and it won't necessarily be the same jacket you started with...
My option for less noise is wear waterproofs as little as possible. If it isn't too windy, especially in lowland areas, umbrellas are often more effective than jackets.

They don't manage heat any differently to anything else on the market: you can vent the garment and hope that'll be enough, but otherwise you just end up sweating.

Unfortunately in my experience you generally trade off usefulness in the wet with noise reduction. I have a dreadfully noisy goretex jacket that never wets out but does not have a stealth mode and equally I have had very quiet jackets that I get very wet in. My feeling is that I dont have to put it on unless it is heaving down and in that case, I probably dont care about whether I am noisy or not and if I am spoiling my own or others appreciation of a [censored] day.

True - the noise of the rain is probably as bad as any noise from the jacket.

I tend to agree - I have a nice Regatta (waterproof, breathable, etc.,) which isn't too noisy, but when it is raining hard enough to warrant the hood going up, I lose the outside world completely! However, if it's that wet I generally don't care too much about losing out on the soothing sounds of Mother Nature, mainly because by this stage they will consist largely of an extremely loud drumming noise as 5,000,000 gallons of water hit the ground in my immediate vicinity.
