Someone stole El Guapo, my beloved townie I put together a few years ago on Saturday night. I had it parked out in front of my favorite watering hole while I was inside listening to a cool band (The Ills) play. I came out and it was gone. Hopefully we can find it. It's a distinct enough bike in a small town that the thief won't be able to use it (unmodified) without being recognized. It's probably just ditched somewhere. Such a shame. I think my next one may end up being a fixie so as to punish anyone who just grabs it and rides off.
Got some good riding in this weekend but I'm not motivated to write about it right now.

We were actually talking about that the other day, what would happen if someone decided to swipe our fixies. I predicted that the thief would pedal 2 revolutions then realize that the bike has no brakes and no freewheel and would stop pedalling. After he stopped pedalling he would break his teeth on my stem. I will not be responsible for his dental work. It would be a lesson learned.

A friend of mine had a fixie as his town bike for several years. It would get taken from a bar (most common townie theft venue) and he'd just walk a 1 block radius and always find it again. We always joked that you just needed to look for the pool of blood. Unfortunately, it eventually disappeared for good, but that was like the 10th time it got swiped. I don't go to bars much, so I've been lucky with leaving my townie out many, many times over the years. I guess my luck finally ran out. El Guapo was a sweet ride.
Nope. For many years this was the kind of town you can just park a townie (bike for town riding: should be of low value and preferably ugly to deter theft) and leave it anywhere and not worry. In the past few years I guess the bars have been the exception to the rule, but not being much of a bar goer I got too comfortable with my bike not getting stolen. I've left it in front of my office on Main St. on a busy block (same block as the bar, BTW) every work day for the past three years while I'm in my office. I should have locked it up at the bar, but it didn't occur to me until it was too late. It's not like it was a valuable bike. I paid $5 at a police auction for the frame and a few parts, and spent another $50 on some fenders, a new coaster brake hub, and grips. But it built up really nice and I liked it. And it was my own personalized creation. Live and learn, I suppose...

Never locked my Schwinn Orange Krate up in this small city 38 years ago. But folk have changed to slime. I leave my beater unlocked and it would be gone in no time. They steal beat up Huffy class bikes around here that are chained with small dog collars. The gorillias snap the collars. Then they get a can of cheap spray paint and paint everything on the bike including tires. You gotto be dumb to be brave.

I'm on the evenings and weekends schedule. Wednesday evenings are usually good (going tonight). Weekends vary from one to the next. This weekend looks clear but the 16th and 17th my parents will be visiting.

I'm flexible though at some point my wife is dragging me to Durango to property search. I can drive up to meet you for any scheduled or non-scheduled ride. I brought two cars so I wouldn't have to worry about the wife and kids being stranded here on the mesa.

hehehehe. I was supposed to hook up with a group from Phx this past Sunday. They called to tell me where they were riding 1.5 hours before the ride.......I could have made it but I would have broken a few traffic laws plus I have three girls that I have to get out the door as well. I guess they rode near Hermosa.
I still don't know which day my wife has planned to head that way. I have a delivery coming next Wednesday that I have to stick around for and this Saturday I'm helping a neighbor haul a bunch of [censored] to the dump in Montrose....who knows how long that'll take.....

There's talk of riding the Monarch Crest for Sunday. I never rode it last year so I think I'm due. Word ion the street is there's still a couple of big snow fields to cross but it's otherwise good.
