I run about 25-27 mpw, and for the last few months have been having the nails on my big toes split and tear off. I saw my doctor and he suggested trying different shoes. I've been wearing NB 765's and Brooks Adrelanines. I run mostly on asphalt and some concrete and weight 167. Is this likely to be from the shoes?
I'm trying to ramp up my mileage to get ready for a marathon in December and don't want this to get worse. Thanks, Brian

No, it's from scratching your [censored] too much. OF COURSE IT'S YOUR SHOES MORON!

Your shoes are probably too small, and quite possibly way too small. Consider a larger shoe, either a half size or even a full size larger than whatever you're doing.
If you can get to a specialty running shoe store, get the staff to fit you for a shoe.
It's not the shoes Einstein....... it's the jogging. It's like a cigarette smoker who gets a lung tumor, and just can't help but wonder if the ink on the cigarette packs may have caused it.

Getting sized properly might tell you whether you'd benefit from a wide- width shoe, too. I had never been properly sized as an adult until I had some issues and went to see an orthopedist who suggested regular shoes might be too narrow (and the orthotics guy he referred me to confirmed it, along with the guy at the local Hanson's running shop). My feet feel much better and very rarely give me troubles anymore.

There ya go, pretty much what I said, except he didn't call the moron a moron. A jogger with toenails falling off, and no clue why? He's like the optimist who buys a ex-large jock strap for his 2" crank and two little raisainets (irishmen/aussies) then wonders why it doesn't fit.
