  1. Anyone have good online references or tips for overhauling a 2003 9
speed all Ultegra transmission? I want to remove and clean both front
and rear derailers and replace the chain and cassette. I've overhauled
six speed transmissions in the past but its been a long time.

Do I need any special tools other than a cassette remover and chain
whip? Any brand preference on the tools?

Is it possible to take some old chain and a metal pipe and construct a
whip and if so any tips on the construction?

    Thanks, Bill

  2. If you want things good and clean, see if you can find a gizmo that
holds the chainwheel nuts from the back. That way the rings can get a
    good dip in the cleaner.

My chain whip I made 30 years ago from a piece of steel bar stock
(hardware store) and a FIVE speed chain (all that existed back then).
Just needed to drill some holes for the chain rivets. Know what? It
does just fine on my 10-speed clusters! Anyway, a good drill press is
    handy!

Look over your cable housings. I'd at least replace the inners, but
replace the whole thing if there are kinks where the housing
    attaches/enters.

Tip: leave the derailers on the bike, there's no need to remove them
    just to clean.

I screwed an old chain to a piece of wood scrap several years ago when I
needed a whip in a hurry, still using it.
