I would like some advice concerning the best thing to do with a "broken" Trek 5000.
The day that I managed to suck my rear derailleur into my rear spokes on my beloved Trek was very sickening indeed. The wheel and spokes came out fine, but the derailleur was trashed as well as the aluminum hanger being cracked and bent where it is bonded into the carbon.
I can replace the components, but I have been told the frame needs to be sent to the factory and it will be close to $500 for repair (and painting). The question I have... should I part (tearfully) with my frame and seek something newer or fix what I have. Currently the comp group has been transferred to an old Nishiki frame... but the riding is not the same and I don't seem to want to get out quite as much as I used to. 🙁 I really miss that bike after spending over 8,000 miles together.
Thanks for the advice... I guess I already came to the same conclusion. It's good to hear the advice so that now I can concentrate on coming up with the $$$ to do the job right. If money were no object I would love to put together a nice new paint job with the repair and build it up with a nice Ultegra or Dura-Ace package. Or... even Campy, but I'm kind of partial to the Shimano line. Either way I'll keep dreaming until I save up!
