sounds like you have a p.o.s. retail bike or something. when you had to get new cranks did wherever you bought it from fix it for free? If you had to pay for it this is what I would do: trash that thing and get something of quality. Sounds like the bike is cheap and you are going to end up spending more on repairs then you spent on the bike when you bought it. what kind of bike is it?

I still havent found time to take it to the mechanic to see hbow much will he charge for this, But if its a lot I might buy a road bike, used i think.
