  1. A week or two ago I saw The Daily Show Global Edition on CNN. They did
a segment on a town that recently lifted its ban on Speedos for men.
    <http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=725750&page=1&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312>

The thing that bothered me about the bit was not that this town had a
ban on Speedos in the first place, but that The Daily Show was
exhibiting that childish, embarrassed attitude about men wearing them.
Has shame really gotten so bad in America that even The Daily Show
    buys into it?

  2. Has shame gotten so bad for some people? Yes. Does the Daily Show buy
into it? Not necessarily. But let's face it, they are a comedy show.
They need to play into that shame for the laughs.

What wasn't funny was the woman they interviewed who didn't want to see
or her children to see men on the beach wearing speedos. The horrible
truth is she's probably more the majority than minority. Until this
country gets over it's prudishness, it's going to be that way for a
while. Look at how popular Jammers are now.

    Jim

  3. Just last week (6/19) the NY Times had an article on how it has become
nearly impossible to discern gay men from straight men based on grooming and
style. One exception noted by the Times is that only gays wear Speedos.

Just yesteday, I carved out 2.5 miles in the green Atlantic. I proudly wore
my comfortable and very visible red Speedo -- and was the only guy on the
    beach with such minimalist garb.

On the other hand, I was also the only on the beach swimming 2.5 miles
(after the Ft.Walton shark story, no less). Most of the fatties out there
wade in and wade right out.

I say, if you're going to practice an unusual sport, then be prepared to use
    oddball equipment.

It's that kind of homophobic remark that scares straight men into baggy
swim shorts. I'm surprised at the Times.

All the male competitive swimmers in the world will be amused to know
some child at the NY Times thinks they are all gay.

One guy I know has sex with other men, but wears baggy swim trunks. Is
    he still gay?

I thought they all wore jammers these days.

Is swimming an unusual sport? I'm always surprised when I meet someone who
can't swim. Although, of course, it doesn't always come up in
conversation, so I may be missing many data points.

Well, there seems to be a bit of a double standard there. And one in which
the men are at a disadvantage for a change. It seems that women can get
away with pretty much everything as long as there's a bit of cloth
covering some fairly small areas, but men are expected to disguise the
bulges of nature. While some people might say (and very likely do) that I
might look better in a tankini, I don't think anyone has ever suggested
that displaying my 40something body in a bikini shouldn't be *allowed.*

Martha - wear what you like.

  9. The NY Times said only gays wear Speedos. It didn't say gays only wear
    Speedos.

As for jammers, I suspect the great jiggling mass of humanity at the beach
would also consider them "fruity," to use an anachronistic term. So, I
guess, if we male swimmers are brave enough to stray from the pool and into
the ocean or the neighborhood swimming hole, we must be brave enough to
endure the scorn of a mob of people who regard us as umanly.

I wonder how it works for female swimmers at the beach. Are you embarrassed
to be wearing a serious swimming suit (a la Speedo or Tyr) amidst a throng
wearing thongs? I've noticed that the women I swim with will change into a
bikini after an open-water workout. Maybe it has more to do with the
tanning limitations of Speedo than anything else.

*bows modestly* You should be impressed to know that based on my

  13. Yes things are going backward. Time was when speedo style suits were the
norm. How can anyone swim in those jammers? Speeds are veru practial as
they dry quickly. In Europe they are the norm.

Yup. Here is a true story. Some ten years ago, not long after coming to
the US I decided to buy myself a swimsuit. So, naturally, I went to a
store looking for it. I couldn't find any. All they were selling were
these obscene boxer style suits that looked suspiciously like underwear 🙂

I guess guys who want to prove they are hetero and still swim
unencumbered have to swim nude from now on.

Remember that the reputation of the New York Times is quite tarnished by
    journalists making up stories.

There is such a double standard--even the most modest women's bathing
suit leaves little to the imagination. It is fine for little children to
see that but not men in speedos?

    Sorry for the homophobic question...

  17. Excellent point. I think I read in one of the previous threads in this
group that in some places in Europe, you are NOT allowed to swim in
local pools unless you're wearing a Speedo (and swim cap). When will
    America catch up??

  18. In today's conservative christian political climate, probably BOTH.
