  1. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is it possible to replace an ahead h/b
    attachment with a quill type?

Given the importance of fit with cycles, I'v e never understood why the barely
adjustable ahead type is so poular now (or am I missing something)?

The basic answer is no. Quill stems require a threaded headset, and
threaded headsets require threaded forks. A-head stems are used on
threadless forks (and also threaded forks via an adapter). Also the
internal diameter and material of the fork steerer must be appropriate for
a quill stem, not all are.

The threadless system is arguably cheaper, stiffer, lighter and more
    reliable.

Not really (you could replace the forks). What are you trying to
adjust? Do you want more rise, or a different length reach? A new
stem might do the trick, and would probably be cheaper than any
    conversion job.

YOu have a good point.I am glad I don't have any ahead set devices.
Since upping my mileage this year I have tinkered with my bar position
on all three bikes in recent months, higher, lower in a bid to get them
all similar. This wouldn't have been so easy with the other system. Of
course Petes points about weight etc are very valid (as always).

    No, not at all easily.

Lighter, cheaper, easier to assemble. But I completely agree with you -
although these are benefits for a manufacturer, for a retailer (who
also gets to sell lots of replacement stems) and for a racing team
which can afford to find exactly the right stem for each rider, it's
not a sufficient benefit for the average user to outweigh the
    difficulty in adjusting.

On the other hand, some are, in which case you could replace the stem
    with a collar like this:

and then stick a quill stem inside the steerer like this:
