recruitment, your view?

-"you're either with us or against us", ah, words of wisdom my friend. That's precicly what they want you to think. I voted unacceptable b/c I think it's [censored]. There is no reason to waist so many young lives just so we can occupy a country for the crass motives of wealth & power😠

Public, yes. Private, definitely no. That is a slippery slope and only asking for big trouble.

In a brillant move to enhance recruitment Bush announced today that recruits would be allowed to drink and use drugs on duty.
This new policy has already been tried on subjects at military academies.

I presume that the US military recruits publicly - they now want to have access to places of work, schools, universities.

Not really correct. Nothing has changed with the recruiting policies in reference to this stuff. The thing about going to work and private places was a "proposal" offered by the initiator of this thread to see what people thought. Our military does recruit publicly, and does have access to PUBLICLY funded high schools and universities. This has been the case for decades. Private - no. This has not changed and nobody official has even proposed it. Occasionally - and most recently evidenced by the school district (I may have that wrong, maybe it's a single school, can't remember - DavidMC has a thread about it) in Washington state - a public funded school will make an effort to ban the recruiters from the schools. This is nothing new. It has happened before the current conflict as well, although there is no denying that the current conflict has changed many people's opinions on things. It used to happen because of schools' objecting to the policies on gays, etc, in the military. Now it is happening because of the Iraq conflict. Like I said, nothing new, except for the reason - which should of course be of some concern.

Great picture! That has been floating around for quite a few years. Quick trivia: it's actually quite easy if you ar enot careful to pass out while in formal uniform at a service academy parade standing in the sun. If you don't flex your knees occasionally and keep them locked instead, you can easily pass out in the sun. The funny thing is you wake up as soon as you hit the ground because blood is flowing better again. While in most military parades they would pull this collapsed participant (midshipman in this case) to the back and feed them water, at the service academies the emphasis is on public display, etc, so the approved method of reacting is to lay on the ground motionless when you wake up and find yourself there. This keeps down the movement visible to the crowd (which is at some distance) in the hopes they won't notice. Pretty stupid I know.... Now what is this thread about again?😄

Although I have espoused my agreement in the eventual entry into hostilities w/ Iraq after ALL U.N. avenue's were attemted, I believe Bush "rushed" into this war of choice. The Bush voting base should supply/make-up any short-fall the defense dept. may have. He talks tough but will he back it up w/ convincing "red-stater's" to enlist in higher #'s. He should offer the top 10% of wage earner's additional tax-break's, in addition to the 2 he's already given them, to enlist thier children in his ill-planned war. A real show of good will would be to order his daughter's to enlist in the Army Infantry 'lest they be banished from the ranch 🙄

Yeah, this story just hit the streets today I noticed. While it does bring about some debate on things in terms of privacy information (social security number, etc.), it still does not change the policy of where recruiters can go, etc. They have always been able to call your house. I had a couple recruiters still calling my parents' home while I was attending the u.s. military academy. Go figure.

Also, they have always been able to collect data on people as well. In fact, we are required to send in a Selective Service card with information at the age of 18 that registers us with the Selective Service in the case a draft becomes necessary. This has always been the case, but it is not very strictly enforced. You are, however, not eligible for certain government grants or financial aid for college if you do not register.
