  1. For some reason today seemed to be one of those hazardous days:

First, a near miss at an intersection. When I cross south at this
intersection, i usually shadow a car, unless the pedestrian light is
on in which case it's safe. This time, however, a guy in a pickup is
going north and about to turn left. He would have seen me if he'd
been looking; i had my hand up and was signaling, but even though he
was turning left, he was looking somewhere else! I just widened my
path and he saw me at the last second and SCREEEECHED! By that time I
was safely across but of course, everyone saw and heard. As I was
making it across I saw another roadie going north and he shook his
head in disbelief! I was a bit shaky and stopped at the side for a
second and a group of construction workers on a scaffold were looking
around to see what had happened, and I told them. THey asked if I was
okay and I said yes. BUt really, it was NOT my fault- the guy wasn't
    looking!

Then, a collision with a stupid rollerblader. This was a bit later on
a bike path, which wasn't very busy at that time. A roller blader and
his girlfriend were going the other way. HE decided to do pirouettes
and fancy tricks to impress her and was goign backward. I saw he was
about to go into the opposite lane, so I called out to him. HE
continued to go backward into the lane so to avoid him I went off the
path onto the grass and he stumbled backward right into me.
Now I've seen the results of collisions like this! Fortunately neither
one of us was goign fast, but I was really [censored]- another idiot not
looking where he's going. I guess I was a bit freaked out from my
earlier harrowing expreience and I yeled at him that he was an idiot
and should look where he's going, and a few other cuss words. I didn't
even ask if he was okay becuase I didn't give a f***, and besides he
    looked fine.

Maybe it noticed it more but for some reason there were other hazards-
a woman pulling out of a parking spot without even looking, and some
kid crossing a street without looking while her father was there. This
s*** happens all the time but for some reason maybe I noticed it more.

ANd it was incredibly windy! I should have just stayed home.

And also I know four people now with broken bones: one woman who was
hit by a car, broken collarbone and wrist. One guy who crashed at a
race and broke his collarbone; one downhiller o broke his during a
practice run and a bmxer, same thing. Lucky I wasn't added to that
    list!

  2. Dangerous times indeed. I remember the day I decided to NEVER own a
car again. It was over a year ago when I was walking to work. At a
stop light I waited for the light to turn green and when it did I
started to cross. Some moron impatient as hell turned left at high
speed cutting off two lanes of traffic and almost running me over.

A little shaken I continue on. At the NEXT light exact same thing.
(fyi the time was approximately 3:30 on a September afternoon and
clear) By now I am fuming at the cagers. I crossed a parking lot at
the mall next to work and I see another cager hit two parked cars with
a large crunch and the sound of shattering plastic.

Since I had driven in T.O. a few times and escaped with minor ulcers. I
decided on the spot never to own a vehicle in such dangerous times .
    :-)

Needless to say having found the joys of biking again I don't really
miss being caged. (well on those cold February nights just a bit.)

yesterday (sunday) was bad. the sun was out and so were people of their
minds...every friggin corner some nut job is pulling sudden u-ey, or
flinging door or driving in the bike lane or not looking and i felt like i
was in rome! but thanks goodness i was on my bike easily avoiding every
    crazy cager.
    *rant warning*
i am starting to get more vicious about cars myself. i drive about ten miles
a week, but trying hard to quit (wish my wife would see it my way 🙂).
seeing at work yesterday a 2YO boy who got his head run over (carotid artery
severed) was enough to make me just [censored] as hell. what's the number one
cause of traffic fatailties? people driving!!! what is it now? about 50K a
year in the us? they're everywhere and taking over. taking all the space in
the city and bringing violence across the world, insulating us from each
other and we spend more and more time in our metal cage. all i hear from
folks who could otherwise curb their driving habit is ...but...but...but....
    ahhh! rant over.

and one cyclist victim of inattentive drivers. They were impressed
that I'd broken my own leg.

A friend broke the windshield of a left hook mini-van with his right
arm last Friday. He just has a bruise today but he was pretty sore
when I saw him a few hours after it happened. Bike's okay.

I intern as a consulting firm that is about as big as can be to be still
a small company (if that makes any sense). They just moved out to the
'burbs, so I'm commuting 25 miles a day via car. The sprawl in Atlanta
is really nasty and if I stick around here after I graduate, I want
    nothing to do with it.

That said, I honestly think I'd quit the small consulting firm to work
for (gasp) a much major company that has a building downtown. That way
I could have a 15 - 25 min bike ride to work or take the train/bus if
the summer rain is really coming down (like today).

Oh god the rain...driving is really going to suck today.

Man, he must have been really [censored] to break the window. I've thought
about doing it to several cars but I'm too restrained. It will
    probably give me ulcers.

Seriously though, those windshields are tough. It's amazing that he
got hit hard enough to break a window and not end up in the hospital.

The closest that I've come to something like that was getting hit in
the shoulder by a protruding mirror. The driver was very apologetic
and promised to give bikes more room in the future.

Now, what is a "left hook mini van"? Nothing to do with an East Van I
    assume?

Yeah! The weather was great for biking, and there were tons out there.
Amazingly, we were not buzzed by any cars on this ride, but the bikes!!!
Running stop signs almost right into us, riding slowly (ascending) taking up
the whole road so other bikes couldn't get by, riding on the wrong side of a
narrow road. It was one of those days I was wishing the weather would get
worse so only the hardy would be out riding.

OMG, what happened to that poor kid? Did he die? HOw horrible!

I thought my rant would make me sound like a weiner, but i guess you
all understand. WHatever patience I ever had for rollerbladers is
gone. Cars do stupid things on the road, but rollerbladers are a
menace to everyone. I know one guy who says, they get one warning and
that's it! From now on I yell them out of my way. No more Ms Nice Guy.
And the next time some shmuck in a car yells at me to get on the bike
path I'll yell back that'll happen when rollerbladers are banned.
Maybe I yelled a bit too much at the guy but I was still a bit freaked
    out.

what annoys me sometimes is that at certain intersections, I have to
shadow a car realizing that otherwise, no one will see me and I can
end up like a squished squirrel. At one horrible intersection, the
drivers just totally ignore the pedestrian signal and just turn left-
god forbid they wait 15 whole seconds out of their life!

Rant off... for now, grrr....I guess I am lucky that nothing happened
    yesterday.

was okay, he's hoping to race again.

A couple of weeks ago at a local crit some kid landedon his face-
those guys are insane. HE just got up and started again! But I think
    he abandoned after that.

I sometimes wonder what drivers are doing with themselves when they
drive. If that guy had been looking in the direction he was driving
he'd have seen me for sure. Maybe get one of those big horns they use
    at baseball games! BLAAAAT!

:: the bike path I'll yell back that'll happen when rollerbladers are
:: banned. Maybe I yelled a bit too much at the guy but I was still a

    ::

I suggest you not yell at folks...it can make the situation worse. You're
out there and know know these things can happen, so you're better off just
    dealing with it.

:: what annoys me sometimes is that at certain intersections, I have to

    ::
:: Rant off... for now, grrr....I guess I am lucky that nothing happened

Now, what is a "left hook mini van"? Nothing to do with an East Van I
    assume?

"Left hook" is the maneuver by which a left turning vehicle clobbers
or nearly misses you who is going straight through. He'd been riding
in the bike lane. The driver wasn't looking for traffic in the bike
lane. I'm familiar with the area and generally move out of the bike
lane if I see opposing vehicles signalling left. I figure I'm better
off being where they're looking than where some planner thinks I
should be. (Eastbound on SW Marine Drive west of Dunbar, for locals)

Sometimes you hit a sweet spot and shatter a windscreen. I once did it
to my own car and didn't even bruise my hand.

Pumped with adrenaline is not the time for calm discussion. It's hard

I sometimes wonder what drivers are doing with themselves when they
drive. If that guy had been looking in the direction he was driving
he'd have seen me for sure.

Not necessarily so. Sometimes they appear to be looking but don't see
us because they're not looking for bicycles. The fizzpiddle that
backed into me looked right by me before running me down. Where
bicycles aren't commonly part of the traffic mix, scud jockeys aren't
expecting to see them, so they don't.

Maybe get one of those big horns they use

AirZound is damagingly loud and (Canadian) made for bikes. It's more
recognizably imperative than bravely screaming, HEY!! But sometimes
you haven't got time, or an extra hand, for the horn.

I have for the last few years had this fantasy of mounting a set of
semi-truck air trumpets on my bike. Not those dinky little plastic air
horns they sell at NAPA Auto Parts, but something you'd find on a
    Freightliner.

    ..max

  19. One of my co-workers has the horn. I know it's loud (especially
indoors) because he constantly is using it. Mostly to startle other
    co-workers. :-)

Yeah, what's wrong with blowing off steam? THe idiot could have caused
me some injury and kept me from working. Morons yell at me all the
time when I'm actually following the directions, obeying the rules and
    being conscientious!
