    Odd, isn't it. It's called a "snowflake" pattern, and it's done by
    twisting each pair of spokes around each other. As a spoking pattern
    for a strong, light wheel it's frankly a bit rubbish, but it does look
    rather distinctive. Personally I really like the effect of a 32-spoke
    snowflake like that one.

    I didn't even know it was possible with 32 spokes. Most people do
    snowflakes with 36, like this (small pic, sorry):
