  1. a friend came up from Atlanta and brought some sushi for me. He knows I
love it and that I cant get it here. So...between truly loving the
stuff, plus being grateful to him for thinking of it, I ate about 9
    pieces.
Here's the weird part---the whole next day, I felt semi-awful. No
    energy, almost sick-feeling.

The only thing I can figure is....the rice?
In the nine pieces....the total amount of rice culdnt have been more
    than about a half cup.

    Ma....it wasnt worth it.

Hmmm, reason to stick with your plan!

I had bagels on saturday and got very sick!

I had friends babysitting in the morning so I had DH get a dozen bagels,
cream cheeses etc for them (I live in NY - that's what we do LOL) Anyway - I
forgot to eat breakfast (so hurried!) and we got back at 2!! I was starved
and the bagels smelled so good!! I ate a Cinnamon Raisin w/Cream Cheese and
a Salt bagel w/Veggie Cream Cheese then my throat closed up and I was
coughing and so sick for about 20 minutes!!

Hopefully you enjoyed the sushi while you ate it and then you can think back
on how rotten you felt if you start craving it in the near future! i know I
will not be doing any business with bagels in the near future

BTW: Where do you live that you can't get sushi?? They even have a guy
making fresh sushi at the supermarket here LOL

That makes me think...did he bring the sushi FROM atlanta?? Was that a far
trip or a couple of towns? Maybe that's what made you sick :oP Maybe you had
    funky-sushi poisoning?

Yeah, according to Fitday, a piece of sushi has between 7 and 8 grams
carbs. So that's somewhere around 60-70 grams for your nine pieces.
I'm pretty sure sushi rice has added sugar as well, to make it stickier.
    I think.

Yeah...can relate! Even though I haven't had any carby foods like rice
since I started, even if too much of my carb allotment is grains/brans, I
get all logy and "not quite right" the next day!

Drinking tons of water has made the feeling pass within 24 hours at least...

I was thinking the same about the sugar too - I think they add sugar
and vinegar in the rice. But it's not the sugar that makes the rice
sticky, it's the specie of the rice. It's a short grain, a bit like
the rice-pudding rice. The lump of rice in hand rolled sushi tends to
be smaller in size and in most places the lump of rice is pressed
together with a machine that looks like soft ice cream dispenser and
    those are much larger.

  11. Go for sashimi next round, or make the sushi smaller by taking some of
rice off? My experience with high carb detours is that if you do some
exercise after eating the sushi, the effects wouldn't be that bad.
Knowing that you're "allergic" to high carb product such as rice, what
you have to do in the future after eating high carb meals is make sure
that you don't sit around but do some rapid walking or may be some mild
exercise afterwards. Sitting around, even if you're actually working,
reading, or thinking, wouldn't work v well and you'd end up feeling
    yuck.

Nothing is necessary to make it sticky. The rice naturally has a lot of
starch that does that. The other additions (a piece of kombu, a kind of
seaweed, salt, sugar and vinegar) are flavoring agents.

    (no reason to)

  15. Yep, that's the carb hangover alright. It happened to me when I was moving
up my carbs going into maintenance and added 15g net carbs in one day. It
took me almost 3 days to get over it. :-)

  16. I cheated once with sushi too, also thinking "it's just a little rice,
it can't be that bad." Unfortunately I didn't feel sick from it, and
didn't look up just how many carbs it had until afterwards. I only feel
bad from eating wheat or something with lots of sugar like candy.

There is a sushi place here that has a roll called "The crazy Roll"
It is wrapped in konbu but it has no rice in it at all. Just Fatty tuna,
Salmon and shrimp. That along with some sashimi makes for a most
    excellent experience.
