  1. Seriously, this is not a dodgy post.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced screaming during a crit
before? At this race on the weekend, my mate came second to a screamer.
It was really weird. Here's how Abby described the incident (and my
friend, who I hadn't met before, I met lots of Adams that day...):

"Adam was very nice - great bloke. Still chuckling at his near-win on
Saturday. The guy who beat him gave out the most blood-curdling scream
in the final sprint. Did you hear it?? Gave me a fright - I thought
someone had stacked it. And poor Adam looked like he almost fell off his
    bike mid-sprint in surprise!"

Well I didn't think someone had fallen, but it sounded very out of
    place... is this common behaviour?

Sounds like common [censored] behaviour to me. Maybe he does martial arts and is of the belief that if you scream as you kick, you will actually kick harder.

There was a guy in my club years ago (Logan) by the name of Brendan someone... at the finish line of every club race he won, he would do a Cipollini and throw his arms in the air. I always thought he was quite a [censored] too.

    Lotte

P.S. Next time I shoot someone, I'm going to scream whilst I pull the trigger - might shoot them harder.

I pipped a primal-grunter on the line for 2nd at Kew a few months back..
there was a mighty "rwawareewarrrrrrrhuuunnnnnnfffffrrrerf... " from him as
I went past... never heard a screamer on a bike.. unless my neighbour was
on an indoor trainer at about 2am a few weeks back? 😉

Primal grunting I can kind-of understand. Particularly from men. Perhaps
he'd just had a large meal? I've sobbed before, "the faster you go, the
sooner it's over, the faster you go, the sooner it's over," during a
    particularly painful triathlon experience.

    [smutty innuendo]
If you want them to scream it's always better to come second....oh wait...you said 'crit'... 🙂
    [/smutty innuendo]

My mate grunts when he sprints. It's just a mental thing you get into the habit of doing I think, maybe it helps with breathing, we still make fun of him though. I read a technique in a book for accellerating from a standing start of saying "pow" with every pedal stroke to make you concentrate on each effort.

Next time, I dare you to scream "Holy mother of God!" or "Jesus loves you!".

Go on, I dare you! Having said that, you'd be worried if you got a similar response.

My mate grunts when he sprints.

I'd hate to know what he does in [censored] mode.

That sounds more like a dare. Like "Let's see if we can get people to actually do this".

  7. Another thing, Tamyka - was it a high pitch scream, or more of an "ARRRRRGHHH!". I'd be interested if it was a high pitch [censored] scream.

It does doesn't it? 🙂 And why can't I get the Benny Hill theme music out of my head when reading this thread?

He didn't puncture just as he was in the final sprint? I can't think of many other times it would be acceptable!

It wasn't a [censored] scream. I would've taken more notice if it was.

Nope, but one chick punctured as we were about to roll up to the start.
Fortunately, big club, lots of Cat 1/Elite had just finished, and they
    quickly swapped a wheel.

In hindsight, gee I must've looked unclassy. I didn't even put fast
tyres on. Or take my bell off.

Two things spring to mind, one is a vid clip one of my colleagues showed
me today of an Asian show. The show consists entirely of a man walking
up to people in the street and screaming at them and the reaction of the
screamed at. No words, just "ARRRRRRGH!"

Other thing is when I was playing hockey once. I was in defence and had
no hope of catching the smarty pants who had the ball on the opposing
side so I screamed at him. He stumbled, lost the ball and I swatted it
    away :-)

Don't think it'd have worked again si I didn't try.

I once scored a goal in soccer by running up to the defender who had
just taken the ball off my team mate, telling him "Iain, I know this is
a really inappropriate time, but I think I'm in love with you," and
taking the ball while he stood there stunned.

That sounds really mean, but it's okay, he was probably horrified rather
than pleased, so it was funny.

Oh dear, I just had thoughts of Tam riding in crits, making similar comments to the boys to ruin their concentration.

SDo you remember the old DrakulaÅ› in melbourne.

We went there one night and as we entered a guy in a cloak jumped out
and screamed in our faces. Aparently I broke one of his ribs 🙂 They
    dont do that anymore

Here's a story from my funny cycling stories page.
    http://www.geo.net.au/~mart/funny_cycling_stories.htm

Sometime in the late eighties, as a cat 4 "A" track racer, I heard
someone jokingly tell me that you can yell at an opponent in a race to
startle them and give you a better chance. So, like a naiive 18 year old
[censored], I tried it. This tall, dorky looking fella riding in a T-shirt,
Bailen helmet and Reebok sneakers was making me really nervous with his
visibly loose toestraps and untrue wheels, not to mention his bumping
his elbows into me (it was a 20 lap points race), so I got next to him
and screamed at the top of my lungs. Sure enough, he dropped back in the
field. I placed second, but not before he angrily pulled up next to me
in the final lap and screamed at me before falling back, totally out of
suds. I felt pretty stupid. In fact, I don't think I showed up for
several weeks after that. Never saw him again. If you're reading this, I
apologize...but I sure hope you got your [censored] together with your
    equipment, whoever you were.
Hows that for Primal Scream Therapy?

  19. One could comment that if they have enough breath to scream that they aren't trying hard enough!

Of course if they screamed as they lost and you beat them by a wheel you might not want to point that out to them 😄
