Wheel size

  1. This is a simple question. I am putting a computer on my bike and it says to
    measure the wheel size and them multiply it by 3.14 something. When
    measuring the wheel size is it just the rim or the the diameter with the
    tire. I have a Trek 4500 and without the tire it is 22"

    Since I am simple minded, I put a mark on the tire then roll the bike one
    revolution on the sidewalk and measure the starting and ending point. Due
    to my advanced math skills I use a metric tape measure.

    Measure with the tire on and inflated. The computer counts the distance
    (circumference) the wheel travels in one revolution.

    (circumference) the wheel travels in one revolution.

  5. Might want to take a smidgin off, as when you sit on the bike the tyre
    compresses, unless you are running 60psi+ 😉 I usually pump it up as
    normal, then sit on and measure the distance from ground to axle/QR
    centre. From that use 2*pi*measurement to get circumference.

    Yeah, as someone else said - mark the tyre and ground at that point, get on
    the bike (this will effect the tyre's effective circumference, making it
    more or less the same as when you are riding it), roll it one time until the
    mark is back at the ground point, mark the ground again, measure, and put
    that number in.

    yup...this is the simplest way to do it.

    a 26x2.1 tire measures (about) 204cm...some calibration will be required
    after riding it a bit though.

    Or better, roll it multiple times (e.g. 10 times) and divide the outcome
    by 10. This will minimize the error by a factor 10 also...

    That depends on whether you intend to ride the bike on the rims only,
    or with the tyre mounted. I find tyres quite useful in this respect.
