Speaking of superstitions, last night I happened into the ambulance
driver who'd cut off my shoes and removed that sock. As she did, I let
her know there was an abrasion wound on the inside ankle.

That seemingly minor patch of road rash took far longer to heal than
anyone would have thought at first glance. It hadn't even scratched
through the sock. The knee and calf of my favourite riding trousers
were holed and those patches healed quicker.

Anyway, the home care nurses kept coming to change those dressings
after the other wounds had healed. They couldn't seem to agree how to
best treat it. They're big on keeping it moist while it's still
draining. Finally I got a five day break over a long weekend. Relieved
of their ministrations, I aired it and it healed into a tidy small
light scab I kept soft with ointment.

Pretty soon I came to see this slowly shrinking wound like the pop-out
cooking indicator stuck in some commercial frozen turkeys. I figured
when the skin was all smooth again, I'd be ready to ride. It's smooth.

So seeing her last night felt like confirmation.

My wreck and yours came right after a long thread appeared here on road
rash. I remember thinking "I don't need to read this one." I was
wrong. =] I fell on a wet day, so mine was pretty minor. I just let it
air. Like you, my worst road rash was through a couple layers of
clothing but it healed up quickly.

It has already been great. Around here (Tx) we can ride pretty much all
year long (if you don't mind the heat). Took advantage of the time off
to do some maintenance on my bike that I'd been putting off.
