My wife is an oncology nurse that does a whole lot of those health fairs, and I can absolutely
guarantee you that the survivor groups in this area are far more aware of Lance Armstrong than the
average group of non-cyclists, as are the oncology nurses. One person does not make a trend or
represent a group, even if they wear a badge that says they do.

FWIW, Lance also does oncology meetings, having attended the grand opening of the Pay Sajak Pavilion
in Annapolis, where the oncology breast center is located (Pat Sajak and his wife were major
contributors to the building fund, evidently for no more reason than they wanted to do something for
the community).

You'd think that someone who is employed in the oncology field would know something about its
role models. Sortof like being a self-employed auto mechanic and not knowing who "Click and
Clack" are. It would be reassuring to the "cancer customer" to have a basic level of common sense
prevalent. My Sister the Doctor worked at UC-Davis for a while. She got there the year after
Someone Else Whose Name We All Know was life-flighted in from the grouse-hunting fields and they
patched him up. (Quick, everyone, what year??) She's not a cyclist and really has no interest in
it, but she recognized why the racing posters were up on the walls. **

Oncology has a lot of role models to choose from. The number of people that have lived through
serious cases of cancer and come back are not limited to Lance Armstrong, so, no, I'm not surprised
that a person that works in oncology is unfamiliar with Lance Armstrong. The scary part of being
married to an oncology nurse is finding out how many people I've known for years are cancer
survivors (friends and neighbors), how many celebrities are known cancer survivors, etc. Rue
McClanahan, Shirley Temple Black, Ann Jillian, Julia Child, Jill Eickenberry, Sandra Day O'Connor,
Marcia Wallace from the Bob Newhart Show (she and Rue McClanahan are among the most active
celebrities in breast cancer survivor activities)... the list goes on and on. Did you know all of
those on the above list? They are only the easy ones. Oh, Suzanne Somers, Olivia Newton John, and
more recently (either the news or the occurrence) Carly Simon. And I think all of the above are just
from the breast cancer survivor group.

No, there are more role models than one. Lance isn't unique. He is probably a bit better known
because of the level that his cancer reached for him to come back successfully. But, again, I would
hardly be bothered by someone in oncology that was unaware of Lance Armstrong.
