Last year's tour, mayo and heras weren't exactly on fire either.
Beloki was out and still isn't back to normal. In 2003 i think it was
six or seven of the top ten at the tour were spanish!

Mayo was in a breakaway with Laiseka. That certainly had something to
do with where he wound up by the end. His placement with McGee in the
stage he won is more telling at this point, because it says that he has
fitness - just not the finishing touches that will make him a GC
contender. If there's one man I see learning from his mistakes this
year, it is Iban Mayo.

Acording to his web site he was afraid he would have been carried away by
the intensity of the competition in the DL and his trainning program would
have suffered. He opted for the TdS becuase the racing tempo and some of the
stages have similar profiles to the Alpine stages of the TdF.

We'll see. Probably we can get a bit more data next Sunday.

We should also be able to see whether Beloki has recovered at all his form
after these 2 years. He has to prove he can be the leader of the Liberty
team, and he has a great chance now that Heras is not having a good season.

I think that the spanish teams will do just fine in the TdF as cycling has
diversified and there is a greater variety of talent. In fact if Liberty and
Baleares do not have a TdF cnadidate it could open the door to a wealth of
stage victories.
