  1. I made my faux Thai fish curry last night...

    http://makeashorterlink.com/?K2546164B

and this morning I woke up with an angry rash on my upper
lip. The only other time I've experienced this rash was when eating
Chuck Taggart's Shrimp and Collards Gumbo, another fav.

    http://www.gumbopages.com/food/soups/shr-col.gumbo.html

The rash comes on overnight, lasts a couple days, then disappears.
It's quite irritating, like my upper lip has been burned. This is
really weird as I really have no true allergies that I know of. I've
only experienced this rash a few times and only with these two dishes.

Even weirder, I don't always get the rash when eating these dishes. I
use Chuck's creole seasoning all the time, as meat rubs, chili spice,
etc, but the rash only occurs when used in the shrimp/collards gumbo,
but not every time. I've never previously gotten this rash from my
curry dish despite eating it dozens of times. But, this time I used a
different Patak's curry than usual (Vindaloo). I'm thinking it must
be certain spices in combination with seafood. Anyone ever experience
    this sort of thing?

    nb ...totally baffled

Could be the coconut milk... certain brands make me itch too... think
it's got something to do with the preservatives that they use, and this
can vary... did you use the same brand each time? just a thought..

The only thing the two dishes have in common are the spices and
seafood. I've never had any probs with coconut milk.

Not good. Hope it's not the seafood, that would be really bad 🙁

I briefly considered that, but I've never had a reaction from eating okra in
other dishes. Love fried okra. Besides, no okra in the fish curry.

  7. chemicals in contact and heated often form third unintended chemicals.
Perhaps that is what is happening here between a couple of the ingredients,
and you are reacting to that unintended chemical?

However, speculating out in left field here, your having a rash only on
your upper lip, without any other symptoms elsewhere, indicates a reaction
because of depositing the whatever there on that skin, and that raises some
    questions -

    1) why not the lower lip, also? Is it limited to the upper lip because of
something present only in the vapor?

    2) Or maybe you wipe your upper lip more often with this dish? Cloth
napkin/sleeve :-) ? detergent residue released by one of the compounds in
the dish or more deposited because you are being careful and wiping the lip
    more with this dish?

    3) Shaving soap/aftershave, etc. reacting to the vaporized whatever?

    4) Are you now washing your lip before eating this dish because of a
previous problem, removing protective oils only with this dish? - or washing
the lip after eating, allowing compounds to reach the skin?

    5) You got some foreign spices harvested in places that use all that
rejected chlordane, etc., banned by in the US and shipped to Brazil, etc.?
Some places check on its use, others don't. (That stuff works pretty slick,
too - cheap, keeps weeds down for years, cuts way back on labor costs.)

or is the rash because you get caught down over the pot holding the dish,
skimming the broth because it's so good, and someone hits you in the lip
trying to put the lid back on the pot? :-)

    Hope you find the source......

ps - if it's the last one, wear safety goggles and a mouthguard - you could
    lose an eye.

As you know I am not a doctor

I don't think its a food allergic reaction. Generally they get worse and worse
with exposure to the allergen. Also if it comes from food it is very rare that
it would be isolated to a single area and not systemic. What alleviates the
symptoms? Benadryl cream? Please think about other areas - it may be a contact
problem - what have you changed or used anew lately? Dryer sheets? Fabric
softener? Laundry detergent? Have you changed sheets and/or pillows or pillow
cases? Shaving cream? razor? different face soap, scrubbed extra hard?

Buy there are a million possibilities.

    Good luck

The first couple times was from the same dish. No dish, no allergy.
That would seem pretty conclusive. OTOH, this time it's gone
further. I woke up this morning and my afflicted lip is now a fat
lip. Maybe it wasn't the dish, but I can't think of anything else to
    attribute it to.

Get thyself to a doctor - Don't mess with allergies - they can easily and quite
    often kill people.

I haven't had the rash but Taco Bell hot sauce and a couple of other hot
sauces will cause my mouth, tongue, and what I can see of my throat to
break out in blisters. But it doesn't happen when eating jalopeno
peppers, my homemade hot pepper jelly, or homemade chili that is heavily
spiced. Unlike you, I do have allergies but I'm still baffled.

I have a similar reaction to certain spider bites and each time I get
one, it does get worse. As Dimitri pointed out, allergies get worse
with each exposure. Is it always the same dish? If not, I would
    suspect something else.

If no other part of your body is affected, the doctor will probably
tell you it's a "concact" allergy.
