  1. Well, after being relegated to the bits heap for quite some time (couldn't find forks with a long
enough steerer at the right price (free, heheheh), I finally managed to resurrect my old (first MTB)
Reynolds 501 tubed steely this w/e!

I'd been working on it over the past few months once I'd found forks for it on an old bike Kath had
kicking around. The forks are a lovely metallic pinky/purpley colour, which goes just fine with the
yellow frame and blue bars and cranks.

I threw an old megarange 7 speed freewheel combo onto the back wheel, and set it up with just the 32
middle ring up front (using old mech to keep the chain on), front and rear v's, a 1.9 (I think)
front tyre with centre ridge and a WTB 2.00 (or something like that) thingy on the rear. Old V split
saddle, big wide DH bars, adjustable rise stem set at max height - rides like a dream! Gonna put a
42 or 44 big ring on and lose the middle I think - I need taller gears, but the lower ones aren't
much needed for my commutes (and 44 to 34 isn't a very tall gear anyway ',;~}~ ), and I span out
real early on the way here this morning.

I had a few hassles sorting this out, not least of which was replacing the old BB. I put a good but
used one in there, but the flanged cup got stuck half way in. I managed to get it out and clean the
BB shell threads, but it still wouldn't go further than half way using the BB tool, 'cause the
cup's splines were shot (they're always [censored] to start with IMO). I ended up getting heavy with a
set of pump pliers/'footprints' on the flange itself to get it in, but I did get it in in the
end........only to find I'd put a really long spindle BB in there and the chain line was never
    going to work

going to come out again in one piece.

So, I dug the right length BB outa the Big Red Box, unscrewed the non-flange BB cup, knocked the BB
out from the other side, knocked both cups off the shorter one, and banged it all back together in
    the frame - problem solved!

The rear mech cable housing is made from about 4 different pieces, which is cool, and the whole bike
is most obviously a true FrankenBeater.

It felt good to be riding the old rigid steel yellow (and now pink and blue) peril again - can't
wait to get the taller gearing set up and really give it some speed!

    Cheers!

Shaun aRe - My Nokian Gazz's are safe from road abuse once again ',;~}~

I know the feeling :-) Just resurrectet my old steel horse to. Its born with a rigid fork. But,
isnt the old steel MTBs with 1 inch steertube? Is it posible to get a suspension fork for 1inch
head tubes? Its an old tye headset, not aheadset. Any suggestions for suspension forks for my old
    steel beast?

Yup, there is a reason why i dont mention the brand, but if you would like to guess the brand, it
starts with UNI and ends on VEGA :-D

    Thanks Peter

My girlfriend asked me the same question last night???

Well, i might do that, just wanted to keep the option open :-) Its a really nice ride at the moment.
I have put some nice Victoria slicks on, so its a really smooth ride now. So, keeping it rigid is a
    good thing for now.

The funny thing is, the bike is 10 years old, it was born with an LX RD and Shimano Exage FD, exage
shifter pods and cantilever brakes. I havent changed a single bit (except cables, chain, cogs and
rings, but thats 5 years ago) and it all works 100%! It shifts more silently and just as good as my
fully 2003 XT on my race bike :-) So thats pretty impressive :-)

But, the seatpost is stuck :-( I cant get it up at all. Its "welded" to the steel fram, any
    solutions anyone?

    Peter

Lennard Zinn covers how to remove a seatpost in his maintenance books, but also there is this site
which covers the same things: sheldonbrown.comstuck seatposts.html I think it is
    extremely comprehensive.

Ah, the front mech on this bike still works perfectly! Rear mech only died because of a crash. Front
hub, rim and spokes are the original too (rear got changed when I smashed it up) - this bike has got
to be approaching 15 years old too.

It does feel good, and I'd love to take it to th trails, but the fork I have put on is a bit of an
unknown quantity (came off a cheap, heavy old bike) - I wouldn't trust it on rough off road.

Sheldon Brow has a section of his web site dedicated to this topic - take a look! Don't know if it's

I imagine you noticed a slight difference in rolling resistance. You'll have to ride around the
parked cars now though, no more riding over them wondering what that small bump was.

I actually saw some 1" threaded rigid forks in the LBS last night. If you are interested these a
pair of new, black unicrown type rigid forks - £15. I know you like the pinky / purple metallic
colour though so I guess you'll stick with what you've got eh?

flimsy! Theyre 'mounted' on little plate steel 3 sided box affairs, welded to the forks - they flex
like a very flexy mofo with the V's on them.

Say, did the forks you see have a long steerer? - That's what held me back, nowhere local could get
anything with a long enough steerer.

    Cheers again Steve.

That's the idea - I'm giving Kath a 'backy' to the wedding on it.

make sure you put some "stunt pegs" on the rear for her to stand on.

I have a spare large (46T I think) chainring if you want one Shaun.

Cheers for that, appreciated, I'll let you know if I need it (5 bolt compact? mine's 4 visible
bolts with one bolt hidden behind the crank arm type thingy) - I got a couple of 44 or 42's (not
    sure which) that might

    work

It was a new fork so it looked pretty long, I can ask next time I'm in (which will be later this
week). The LBS that has them is an old skool type shop with a wizened old road race legend in the
corner (the original owner) building wheels and talking to folks. Theres all sorts of bits and bobs
lying around (including some Ti spindled Onza H.O. pedals...) and in the corner I noticed a bunch of
forks, amongst which was the 1" threaded rigid.

Cool - thanks. They need to be 170mm or so from crown to top of steerer (just found my notes).

Shaun aRe - Now, if I could just get the ancient and heavily patched tubes to hold air for longer
    than half a day.....

I'd love to, but don't have any web-space or a digiphototakingboxthingy. Maybe I'll get some
eventually - the thing really is a beast and a head turner (people feel forced to turn away,
    heheheh.....).

Oh pissflaps. I'd really love to know if it's more eyecatching than the
c.1988 GT Tequesta I had with a Marin fork, purple anodised rims and assorted other poor-taste
stuff. A beautiful thing, happy when bimbling down the pub or flying into a tree at full pelt.

Andy Chequer, crimes against taste? Moi?

No - I doubt it could touch yours in that dept, but it does look bright (clashingly), and dirty, and
rough as old [censored] to boot (so to speak). Flies though, and will fly even better when I put a
