  1. Hi, after a long absense (2 weeks) of no broadband, I am finally back
    on-line!

Anyway, on my bike I'm getting a grinding, no - a straining sound, on the
down push from my crank. Have I overtightened the cranks? It's just when
under pressure e.g. accelerating or climbing a hill.

    Thanks for advice.

Did the lack of screen time cause an increase in cycling time? Inquiring
    minds need to know...

IME it's pretty hard to overtighten cranks unless you've got a gert
long wrench - perhaps the BB is creaking?

(Is it the same sound when you push down on either crank? If so I think
it's unlikely that you've overtightened them both, by a similar amount).

Unfortunately I was moving flats, so didn't get much extra time. Still got
two big boxes of stuff behind me to unpack. In fact, I'd say probably less
than usual as my new place has outside storage for my bike. It's pretty
good, but my last place had the bike in the hallway.

Well, that's what I thought. It's on both pedals that I get the creaking.
Yup, that's the correct word. I did a chain clean the other day and lubed up
my chain. The sound disappeared for 20 minutes.

The BB is only a three or four hundred miles old, so I'll be amazed if its
that? Maybe I should just strip and clean it all.

That'll be your knees, then (:

I had a similar thing and it was the pedal bearings. It was a bugger to
diagnose, though, since it only occurred with some fairly hefty weight
on the pedals and thus not at all on the stand. :-)

    Sounds like the BB bearings.

    Sounds like a plan.

Coincidentally, I was pretty annoyed last week when I had to replace
the BB on the hybrid which had only done ~2000 miles, but it was well worth
the 17 quid to get rid of the annoying clicking noise the old one was
    making!

I'd look at the chainring bolts and see how tight they are.

I had this increasingly recently, and having tightened all the easy
things and looked at the pedals I took off the right crank and
tightened the bottom bracket. That was it.I have had similar problems
ultimately traced to creaky saddle, handlebar stem, and even a spiral
fracture of the middle of down tube.

Crank bolts are probably not tight enough. Find out what the torque should
be and use a torque wrench.

Had this very recently, tightened everything till it hummed, still
creaking annoyingly. Finally found one of the saddle rail bolts wasn't
quite tight - quick turn with an Allen key and no more creak.

I had a similar straining noise. Turned out to be the SPD pedal spring
thingy that just needed a quick lube. I only found out after I'd
    replaced the bottom bracket :-(
