Chain/gear drops?

It sounds like the freewheel on your rear cassette/block is sticking.
Put the bike on a stand (or upside down) and gently turn the pedals and
then stop turning them; does the rear block keep going when you stop?

Others than I will have a better idea of where/how to lubricate it
properly, but my rather dubious get-you-home method would be a liberal
squirt of WD40 in an attempt to free it up long enough to get you home.

The danger with a sticky freewheel is this is that it will rip the
derailleur mechanism off (or even break the frame - been there, done
that).

If it sags at the top only, it's drag in your freewheel. Try oiling it.
If it sags at the bottom, it's probably your rear mech tensioning
springs at fault. Clean and lubricate, or replace.

Worth a try but many not work if the freewheel/freehub body is broken.
Freehubs sticking like this can get worse.

Yes, it's a freewheel problem. I had to buy a new wheel rim and got it done
while I wait for £34.99.

A new rim fixed a freewheel problem? Astonishing...

ITYM you mean you just bought a new wheel, as the freewheel mechanism
has a bit more to do with the wheel hub than the rim. For high quality
wheels it's worth keeping the rim & spokes and having a wheelbuilder
replace the hub.

Could be a sticking link. Feel around to see if one is stiff, if it is,
lubricate it and wiggle from side to side as well as up and down. That
should free it up.

My neighbour had the same problem, even having the wheel lock solid when all
the chain had been pushed through by the locked freewheel. He'd had the bike
stored for over a year.

Local bike shop quoted £45 for replacement wheel and freewheel. Another shop
said that a worn freewheel would slide on taking up drive - not fail to
'tick' and then drag the chain, they suggested stiff bearings.

So I loaned him a can of Plusgas release fluid, problem sorted. We've done
about 200 miles together since with no re-ocurrence.
