Chainwheel/ crank problem

  1. I have been investigating a clicking I'm getting every time turn the crank
    with the chain on the smaller chainwheel.

    The larger chainwheel is permanently fixed to the crank and the smaller
    chainwheel is bolted to the larger chainwheel.

    Rivets on the chain are catching on the teeth of the larger chainwheel at
    one position when the chain is on the smaller chainwheel.

    I'm still trying to work out what causes this and the solution. My thoughts
    so far are:

    1. The smaller chainwheel isn't evenly seated on the larger chainwheel.
    2. One or both of the chainwheels are warped.
    3. The crank is evenly seated on the bottom bracket (I think this is
    unlikely).

    Any thoughts/suggestion which I should look at first. And what is the best
    way to go about it.

    Could it be as simple as having the wrong size chain on there? Too
    wide, I mean?

    I don't think so. As you turn the cranks the distance between the chain
    (when its on the smaller chainwheel) and the teeth on the larger chainwheel
    varies and it is only close at one point.

  4. Is it possible your BB axle is bent, causing the RH crank to oscillate
    ?

  5. If you look vertically downwards while turning the crank, you can use
    the derailleur arm as a guide to judge whether the large chainwheel is
    moving side to side or the small one or both.
    If it's just the smaller one, then check the fixing bolts are correctly
    seated and tight - can you move it at all with your fingers?

    If it's just the larger one, you say this is fixed to the crank, so
    could well have a dent - take it to your LBS.

    If it's both, grasp both cranks, tension lightly against the chain (ie
    forward pedalling direction) and see if you can rock the cranks
    perpendicular to the frame. If you see what I mean - difficult to
    describe! If you can feel it rocking, it's the bottom bracket.

    Another thought - is the chain definitely not touching the deraileur
    arm when the chain is on the small ring?
