  1. Are all SPDs created equal? I am lending a bike to someone who uses Shimano
road SPDs. Will my mountain bike pedals (Shimano 535) work with his road
    cleats/shoes?

B fit with the SH71 cleat. NG with the SH70.

Although it answers the original question this table is getting a bit
    dated.

In particular the new simplified type of Shimano mountain bike binding
used for M647, M959, M540 and M520 pedals (not shown in the linked
table) has introduced a new cleat complication. The SH51 is suitable for
this binding but the common multi release SH55 cleat is not.

The sheet that came with my M520s only mentions SH51s cleats but I found
a useful table on the Shimano site a week or two ago that showed a new
multi release SH56 but now the site has changed and I can no longer find
the table to offer a link. Perhaps someone has a new link?
