I am considering upgrading from an old pair of Shimano Dura-Ace Look-type pedals. I've had my eye on Speedplay X/2s for some time but I do wonder at the robustnerss of the design. Particularly, due to size the bearings must be quite small and I am concerned they won't hold up. My Shimanos have thousands of miles, have gone through spills, and are still as smooth as silk. Hearing about your experience with Speedplay pedals, in general and in terms of maintenance/replacement, would be most appreciated.

I have a pair that have about 30,000 miles on them. They are now on my back up bike but still as good as new. Follow their instructions on maintenance. That is how I discovered White Lightning so many years ago.
Speedplay bearings are good for tens of thousands of miles. Like 40,000 easy, if you lube them every few months.

I have been neglectful of my X-2's to the tune of lubing them once in 5 years, or about 15,000 miles and they are still smooth as silk. Note I weigh between 200 and 225 depending on the time of the season so they take a beating.
I would recommend you lube twice annually or more frequently.
