  1. Greetings!

After finding a bit of sand on my BB when I removed it, I figured a
thorough cleaning of the BB shell and threads would be appropriate.
How it got there I don't know. I suspect it may have been introduced
when I removed the seatpost to clean and reinstall (aluminum post, ti
    frame) to prevent galling.

On to the question: how do you get your BB shell threads squeaky (but
not creaky) clean without a tap?

    TIA

Paraffin or white spirit and a rag; wire brush if required.

  3. well with a rag off course. several.
    start with a light oil?
    paint thinner
    acetone
    clean rags

the local auto parts store sells a brass brush larger than a toothbrush
    or use your tooth brush

try a thread file-one that has thread teeth down the file's side

the deal with a rag and successive clean rags is the rag is forced to
thread itself into the hole. then the mech twists the rag back und fort

if your gonna paint the insides after cleaning or just general info for
this abomination-thread the rag THEN pour acetone on it and let the
    mess sit for 15.

and do not leave your saddle in the sun in the sun

If you have an air compressor, use an air gun after application of
    degreaser.

Use your fingernail against a rag to trace the path of every thread.

I use a rotary wire brush like this one:

Chucked into a cheap one-speed electric drill. I keep one ready in a
cheap used drill I got for 5 bucks at a yard sale so it's always handy
    and ready to roll.

Stick it in from the right side of the bottom bracket and move it around
so that it "unscrews" the schmutz from both sides of the shell.
