To celebrate Bike Week the Observer asked 8 "famous" cyclist to recommend their favourite route.
The celebrities are Jon Snow, Josie Dew, Adam Hart-Davis, Paul Smith (not that one!) Rocco Forte, Nicola Cooke, Chris Boardman and Alexei Sayle. The routes varies from 37 mile in Scotland to 1000 miles in the Americas (guess who?)

All nice stuff apart from this line from Jon Snow, "Most of the route is single-track - so you could get killed at any moment..."
He also thought it was seriously tough. I suppose it is if you are not used to hills (and there aren't many long sustained hills of that kind in London.)

At least he is out there doing it.. Seems to concentrate on the fear and struggle though.. maybe he is needing to justify the 'challenge' rather than just say 'because I can and I enjoy it'.

Now you mention it, the time I saw him cycling in London, he had his helmet practically off the back of his head. Still, like David Martin says, he is a good advert for the cause simply by the fact that he is a high-profile figure who uses a bike as his preferred mode of transport.
There's also a nice snippet about him in the Guardian Media Monkey Diary column today, turning up late to present some do and dashing straight on to the platform still togged out in bright orange jacket and helmet, launching into his speech with nary a pause for chinstrap adjustment.

I wonder if he's actually cycled his route. The bit you might get killed on is not the singeletrack roads but the A82 between Fort William and Corran ferry which is nose to tail caravans in the summer. Avoidable of course by taking the passenger ferry over from Fort William rather than the Corran Ferry. Iain
