I use a very cheap goodmans CD MP3 player (which sits in the front
pocket of a smock I tend to wear, it is pretty unprotected in there but
if it gets damaged it will not cause major hardship as it is so cheap)
with ordinary cheap headphones (supplied free on an open top bus tour
which only work on the right side worn with the non functioning phone of
my ear (I like to hear around about me even on paths) have fancied an in
ear design but they tend to fall out perhaps I could wear an in ear but
supported by an over the ear design.
Am a great believer in the cheap and cheerfull aproach as if something
gets broken or mislayed it is not a major hardship and listening all
about and with my hearing can't really tell the difference with a "dear"
set up.

Creative Zen Micro. Size of a box of matches, holds my whole lifetime
record collection. Recommended.

I bought SWMBO a Creative Muvo 512MB which she's been very happy
with. It comes with a protective rubber "case" and an arm band
thingy.

Yes I have the Creative Muvo but the cheapskate 128MB one. It easily gets 10
to 15 songs on it, hangs round my neck under my jacket and only has 1 x AAA
battery that seems to last pretty good.

I've got a 512mb MSI player with fm radio and I love it. It's also got a
pedometer, but i've not used that yet. It comes with armband thingies so
you don't have to worry about having pockets and it's rechargable too

Really a choice between the hard-drive types (Creative Zen, Apple Ipod, etc)
and the solid state. I prefer solid state for outdoor use; less to go wrong
through vibration, drops, etc.

Don't quite agree; I think the Apple Shuffle is not good value due to lack
of screen; the limited screen on the Creative models is very useful to know
what's going on, plus the ability to store stuff in folders and skip to a
different folder. Also worth looking for USB-2 data transfer for the
improved speed (some USB-1 models still on sale).

I use the 1Gb version of the Creative Muvo; lost count of number of issues
of In Our Time it stores, along with several CD albums. Even has a
tollerable FM radio (shame no LW for the cricket, will still need the old
Roberts Sportsman for that!).

One AAA rechargeable does 15hrs playing. I keep a second charged AA around
ready to swap. I don't like the headphones that much, but those really
depend on your ear shape.

Also doubles as handy file transfer device between various computers.

I doubt it's safer than riding /without/ headphones, but it's almost
certainly safer than listening to the radio in an enclosed, partially
soundproof, two-ton motorised box on wheels. (Perhaps that's why the
boy racers drive with their windows open - ie to increase safety while
driving about pumping out several hundred watts of thumping beats)

Imagine the uproar if the government tried to improve road safety by
banning car stereos...

I occasionally wear one while cycling, and I can still hear approaching
vehicles, and I can hear more of my surroundings than I would if I was
in a car with the stereo playing. Off-roading with an MP3 player adds
to the fun IMO.

I wouldn't wear one for urban riding; not that I do much of this; as
peds often do baffling things and vocal communication is sometimes, er,
useful.

Besides, given your previous posting history I doubt you meant to
start an intelligent debate on the subject anyway.

I sometimes use an ipod shuffle while cycling, not around town but on
the longer stretches of rural riding, I haven't tried video glasses,
are they any good?

FSVO full attention. Since the likely outcome of failing to pay full
attention due to headphone wearing on a bike is death for the rider, I
