I had bought peaches from the supermarket. The flesh was rubbery. They
tasted okay but I couldn't stand the texture. Have peaches always been like
this and I just never noticed? Or maybe they were just bad?

Maybe they were not fully ripe yet. Once in a while our local store
gets in apples, peaches and some pears from Japan, they are huge but
there is very little juice if any and they have the texture of dry
cardboard. -

them.I note that the price of the cherries is dropping. That's because they
were rotting on the shelf at $4.00 a pound. -

one time out of ten can you buy peaches from a distance and have them taste
right. -

local strawberries, raspberries, peaches, plums, apricots and cherries. Other
fruits ship a little better than the berries and tender fruits. Sour cherries
are especially perishable. They need to be used within a few hours of picking or
else they start to degrade. The best pie of the year used to be the annual stolen cherry pie made from the
cherries in the orchard across the road from our house. I used to prepare the
pie dough and stick it in the fridge while we ran across the street and picked
enough cherries for one pie. The owner used to prune and spray but did not
harvest those trees. We would walk back, pit the cherries, roll out the dough
and stick it in the oven so it would still be warm for dessert. My wife likes
fruit pies warm. I prefer them the next day. -

hard as rocks, then they get a little softer, but turn out to be mealy.A year or two ago, the Giant supermarkets around here started selling
this "Orchard Perfect" line of fruits (peaches, nectarines and plums)
that were supposedly ripe the day you buy them. The first few times I
bought them, they *were* ripe and delicious that day (or the next) and
they had a nice texture. But as time went on, they became more like
regular out-of-season, hard-as-rocks-with-weird texture supermarket
peaches. Sigh.I look forward to late July-August when local peaches are in season !!!
