  1. I am sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything in
the archives. I am trying to get a feel for the group and wonder if people
race or if their interest is as a spectator. I have been part of the group
for many years but have lost track of who races, or used to race. If you do
race, what events and are you any good?

I race track, mountain, and cross. I suck in all the events. Suck is
probably too kind of word but I guess that I can aspire to suck.

Spectator. I ride when the impulse strikes me.

I think most of the group races, or has. I don't race much at all but
like you am planning on doing more. There's a range here from you and
me to a couple of Pros and Olympians and Natinal Champions. Lot's of
good stuff along with all the BS. The BS is entertaining in itself for
    me though.

The question was flawed -- it sort of ignored the people who are an
integral part of the racing scene through coaching, officiating,
    marshalling, promoting, etc.

I am what you would call an ex-wannabe.

Did a lot of road, from age 16 to 23 (1976-1983) in Australia. Competed
until I was 21. Best I ever did was 2nd in a club race in the ACT. So I
    double-sucked.

I hung up the shoes from 1983 until 2 years ago when I got the bug
again here in Sweden. I mainly do longer distances now just for
exercise and really enjoy it. Up to 300 km rides, more typically 100 km
in a morning, average 30 km/h, ca. 4000 km/year. No commuting to work
by bike. I have yellow tyres on my wheelsets so some people get the
    impression I might be good, which I suppose I am, for a 45 year-old
    office worker has-never-been . . .

But I still build excellent wheels ;-)

Not flawed, just a more specific question than what you are thinking of.

    Road mostly, and no.

Sucking is relative. Against real bike racers, 99.99999% of people suck.
Some just suck worse than others--but almost everyone sucks. Anyone who
thinks they don't suck needs to find a bigger pond, and then they will find
that they do, in fact, suck. I was starting to think that maybe I didn't
suck so bad earlier this year, so I did a few P/1/2 road races and was faced
with overwhelming evidence that I do still suck. I raced at Mt. Hood last
week in the 40+ race and, thanks to guys like Chris D'Alusio and Mark
Southard, again was reminded about my suckiness. Of course, when they race
against Webcor, etc., they suck too. And when Webcor goes to races like
Georgia (or where ever) with D1 Euro guys, they discover their own level of
sucking. And even most of the D1 Euro guys suck on the big stage. Yes, we
all suck. There, I feel better now.

    dumbass,

this should be evident to everyone, but rbr freds continually feel it's
somehow relevant to relate the riding abilities of pros and their
    fellow freds.

    eg.
"Truth is, none of you guys would last more then a few stages with
    Somaribba, Brandli, or Luperini."

Even on the big stage, the top riders suck at certain times of the year. So
that means everyone sucks, but there is still a hierarchy of suckiness. So
we put God at the top, which in cycling terms is Merckx, E. Then every other
cyclist is accorded his or her own level of suckiness.

Regarding ponds, I agree. I feel worse about winning a local race than
finishing top 30 in a kermis.

the suckage theory of relativity still holds for him.

what euro races did he ever win ?

He could beat the women. That was what you put out as the challenge.
Doesn't relate to how he'd done against the top men.
Everybody sucks in one way or another.
