  1. I've come back to riding a bike after 35 years out of the saddle. I've
been going only a week or two, but boy, does my [censored] hurt.

Do those padded cycle shorts help?

Or will my bum just adapt in time?

    Cheers

    ....little from column A...

I just got back in to cycling after a 10+ year hiatus. I'm admittedly
overweight so there's a lot of pressure on my butt ... however... you
    shouldn't really hurt a lot.

Your seat can be adjusted many different ways and should be until it isn't
    hurting you.

It may be the seat design too but my experience is it has mostly to do with
adjustment (unless you have a really awful saddle)

I'm sure someone here will post a link on saddle adjustment.
(front to back position, seat height, up-down tilt... even a few degrees or
millimeters off and you'll be sore)

Look forward to reading the other replies you get!

    Chris

They do, yes, but a firm or even hard saddle helps more.
    Counter-intuitive but true.

    It will.

It could be your saddle is too soft! My mountain bike's saddle (padded
and cheapo) is nothing like as comfortable as my tourer's harder saddle.

I'm sure someone will post a more technically correct response, but
basically you want the weight to be taken by the bony bits of your
posterior, and I think that's better with a harder saddle.

If your soreness is caused by friction, I would recommend the
    application of Vaseline (petroleum jelly)!

Place a smear in the affected area, usually where the pelvic bones are,
    ones that you sit on.

  7. Get a better seat---one of those split types which only come into contact
wth the pelvic bones. Not only more comfortable but better for your health!
