I have just slackened off the headset and from the discription on Sheldon
Browns site it is indeed a French thread so new forks, headset, stem and
bars. Given that the bike needs a respray etc. unless I can find a donor
bike its going in the skip.

I must say that I was impressed, there was still clean grease and no sign of
water ingress in the headset even after 25+ years BUT I have not attempted
to remove the stem which may be very different.

If you like the bike then replace the forks, do not straighten them

instead of the sensible 1". Which could mean a new headset and a new

I have to say I find that sad. In your position I'd very likely make the
same decision, but... I was in the LBS this afternoon, and a friend's
thirty year old time trial bike was waiting to be collected after a
respray, clean up, and new (clincher) rims and tyres replacing the
original tubs. It looked absolutely beautiful, and will in all
probability continue to be a great bike for another thirty years.

He hasn't gone down the cold-setting-and-modern-kit route, but if you
could see how nice those mavic deraileurs look you'd understand why.
