Replacement chamois'?

Liner shorts: basically, underwear with a chamois. Fairly cheap, so you
could cut the chamois out and sew it in.

Yes, many good outdoor fabric stores will stock cycling short pads. The
last time I got some it was from RCT in Oregon. Before that, Seattle
Fabrics. Both had good quality at reasonable prices.

I have. For a long time I wore Hind shorts with plain synthetic chamois that's
like a real chamois. The chamois wears through at my sit bones. The lycra is
definately worn at this point, but still OK. It's too worn to bother with
replacing the chamois though. Frankly I can't see where this project could be
worthwhile. One can find good shorts for $30 or less, which still last several
years.

BTW, I wish I could still find good shorts with this plain synthetic chamois.
Thicker and more gimmicky is the way they're all going these days, like
marketing ketchup or something.

Thanks to all for the responses. To answer your question I have two pair of
Castelli's and one pair of PI. Castelli shorts are very costly, but since I
ride about 6000 miles a year and am 63 yr. old I want to pamper myself a
little. (I don't want to leave everything to the kids 🙂. And IMHO the
Castelli shorts are without question the best, most comfortable I've worn.
The padding seems to get flat and lose it's cushioning. The stitching is
also trying to come loose. I was hoping to come up with a good set of
padding to replace the worn ones, and, no the lycra is not worn yet. Maybe
the Castelli lycra is a little better than the lesser expensive shorts. It
sure should be! I would like to keep my newest pair to ride the longer
(100+) rides, but could use the rebuilt(?) shorts for all the shorter casual
and training rides.

I'm in the same situation in that I wore out the pad. My shorts are some
older Nashbar brand shorts made from a very nice, durable material. It is
heavier than all the other shorts I own.

I consider shorts a "consumable" for that reason.

Performance Bike Elite shorts are all-around good, but will
probably fall apart before the chamois gets that bad. I'll
chuck them and get more, or try some other brand.

Now, my 1980's pair of vintage Vigorelli's...that's another
story.

Thanks Blair, I appreciate the comment, but since my son got me into
riding about five years ago, I just can't get enough saddle time. My
only regret is that I didn't start riding when I was in my twenties!
With retirement looming on the horizon, I'm looking forward to even more
miles. The doctors just shake their heads. All my friends think I'm
nuts, but I'm just having a ball...especially when I can beat some young
guy up a hill! It does happen occasionally.

You have pretty low expectations. Do you think 63 is that infirm? Or do
you have a degenerate condition? If not, you should check out masters
racing.
