  1. I'm looking for the ideal "urban long run" shorts. Can someone
recommend running shorts with the following features:

    - interior key pocket
    - at least one side or rear pocket, for carrying $$, TP, maybe a gel or
    accelerade powder, etc.
    - more coverage than splits, way less than down-to-the-knee basketball
shorts - you know, typical v-notch length, 4-5" or whatever
    - extra credit for super light microfiber fabric

I have a pair of Sugoi 42k (splits) which are great but sometimes
prefer more coverage; and some Insports with side pockets (cheap online
clearance) which to my surprise lack an interior key pocket, and the
keys don't work well in the side pocket - the pocket ends up drooping
below the shorts and bouncing off my thigh every stride. Looking for
    the best of all worlds.

  2. They don't make "[censored]-shorts" for runners.

Oh, puh-leeeeez. Search eBay for "running shorts" and you'll see just
how very very wrong you are, once again.

But that's not what I'm looking for, this time anyhow.

I really like these from Race Ready... no interior key pocket but 2 exterior
velcro key pockets and about 5 exterior webbed pockets.... also very light.
They come in both short and long lengths.

The sporthill packrat shorts are another alternative. They are still fairly
short, but less provocative than the Sugoi 42k. Not sure if it has a key pocket,
see if you can find it in the running stores.

  6. Thanks gents.

    RaceReady

wins this popularity contest, two enthusiastic votes to one mention
each for SportHill and BOA. And they have about the same storage
capacity as my Mountainsmith Auspex backpack. Alas, there's no bamboo
option, but I ordered a pair anyhow.

Oh, and Bill, just for you: http://tinyurl.com/7ksfu

  7. Dude,

Have you considered putting your primary key in the laces of your shoe
(inside the first eyelet, so even if the shoes come untied you don't lose
the key)? I've done this for all my long runs and it's much less intrusive
    than key pockets.

Thanks for the idea, but my house key is actually a trifecta: outside
door to my Brooklyn condo building, inside door, and apartment door.
At most I could hide 1 key somewhere and carry only 2 not all 3, but
not worth the hassle or risk. Guess I could split them up 2 and 1, or
3 and 0, tape 'em together so they don't jangle with every step, and
lace them in; but that sounds like much more of a PITA than the key
    pocket.

And the key pocket never bothers me. (You didn't get the shorts with
the burlap pocket and liner, did you? I don't care how well that stuff
breathes, you really don't want it next to your skin.) If anything, I
kind of enjoy retrieving my keys from inside my shorts after a run, as
the "civilian" pedestrians on my busy street wonder for wtf I'm
    reaching.

  9. Followup: my RaceReady v-notch shorts showed on Saturday after I had
ordered them on Thursday. They're just about perfect. My only small
complaint is that my set of 3 keys jangles in the side pocket unless I
do something to prevent it (on Sunday that was wrapping them in some
TP; henceforth it'll probably be taping them together). That doesn't
    happen with interior key pockets.

Their storage capacity is impressive. For their maiden voyage I
carried more than I ordinarily might on a Sunday, just to see how
    that'd work:

    - keys
    - cash
    - TP
    - succeed caps
    - two scoops of Accelerade powder
    - two scoops of Endurox powder

Plenty of room for more, though eventually I'm sure there are limits
beyond which the weight and bulk become objectionable. The booty
listed above, for me, was within these limits. Though I was reminded
that four sweet sports drinks over the course of a run (I had some
Gatorade endurance formula - free sample from somewhere - before
starting) is about all I ever want in succession.

I also ordered a visor from them. Almost every other visor I've seen
has had at least one of these flaws:

    - overpriced
    - cotton, completely or in part
    - garish corporate logo which they're not paying me to wear

RaceReady's is all Coolmax, nine or ten bucks, and has their logo
discreetly in back. I found it ventilates better even than my mostly
mesh cap, looks somewhat less dorky than a sweatband, but doesn't keep
the sweat out of my eyes quite as well as cap or sweatband. Still,
pretty good for hot hot days.

  10. A rear pocket for money and gels? What does this cream puff think his
    ass crack is for?

    Hey Bikeme,
Do you still cycle, or just run?
