I'm currently using Ritchey cleats in my mountain bike shoes. I have Ritchey clipless pedals (gen 2) on two of my bikes.
They're getting increasingly hard to find. I'd like to transition over to Shimano pedals as these ones wear out. Does anyone know whether my cleats would work with Shimano pedals (for that in-between period)?
I've been meaning to test ride a bike with Shimano pedals to find out, but perhaps someone here can answer my question sooner...

Pretty much unrideable. Seems the back part of the cleat is too small on the Ritchey cleats, and it's all weird curved and stuff. Doesn't seem to have a recess for the pedal to grab on to.

Those were probably the first generation Ritchey cleats. They worked great in the Ritchey pedals (no surprise), and I didn't really have any problems using them in "road-style Shimano SPD pedals" (which were single-sided and single-entry, probably making them a lot more secure than most MTB pedals). I am 99% certain that the current generation of Ritchey cleats (what I'm riding now) are 100% Shimano compatible - I know I've swapped bikes with others who had Shimano pedals and neither of us had any problems.

Thanks for the info. Was Ritchey not allowed to produce SPD clone cleats? Was there a licensing deal somewhere maybe?
I'm sure they engineered their own solution for the first version to get around the Shimano patent and avoid paying royalties. But the problems created by forcing people riding Ritchey pedals to have "slightly incompatible cleats" for all the other pedals on earth seem to have been a bigger issue in the long run.
FWIW, the first generation Ritchey cleats did work pretty well in Shimano pedals, but Shimano cleats were HORRIBLE when used with the Ritchey pedals - there's still a lingering aftertaste in the cycling community over "how bad those pedals were" due to the fact most people who tried them on someone else's bike did so with Shimano cleats.
