CBS Tour de France Coverage.
What was that?
55 minutes of covering what had already happened this week. And then 5 minutes of coverage of
possibly the most important stage of the tour.
When I tuned in to see the coverage of todays stage, I expected possibly a 1/2 hour recap of the
past weeks action. Instead I got the worst coverage imaginable.
Very disappointing, I think I will stick with OLN, the internet and almost any other media outlet to
cover the tour.

You saw 55 minutes of coverage of racing from this week? I must have been watching the wrong CBS --
the one I saw was mainly commercials, tourism shots and cycling history to me.
I'd love to see 55 minutes of bike racing on TV.

Just an observation:
It seems to me the CBS production was targetted at people who watch cycling at most once per year
(if at all). I think that people who have never (or not recently) seen the Tour de France would have
gotten alot out of today's broadcast.
It was sandwiched between auto racing and golf. CBS wants to make a program, above all, which will
be enough interest to those viewers so that they don't jump around channels. Hence all the contrived
melodrama, mood music, etc.
Maybe there will be some new cycling fans made today.
Every die-hard cycling fan looked at their watch or clock at 12:55pm today. So I have to wait unitl
tonight to see it. No biggie. I know how it ends; I was reading along this morning on
cyclingnews.com - which is what I did before I got OLN.

Exactly. It has its place. It is just very unfortunate for those sophisticated (or whatever) fans
that have no other video source.

Hah ... I darned near posted the exact same thought. WHAT was THAT?
Funny part here was that, when it finally got to the Alpe de Huez stage "coverage," our local had to
break away for a tornado warning. I'm sure I didn't miss anything.

My wife has never watched a cycle race and doesn't follow sports on TV or elsewhere. She was so
bored by CBS's [censored] "story" about the tour (and the repeated commercials) that her eyes glazed
over. After the debacle passed, I asked her, "Did you learn anything?" "Not to watch CBS," she
wisely said.
N=1, so the correlation is absolute: CBS lost a lot of viewers today. What ever happened to
... sport?

They wouldn't have gotten a lot about cycling. It's wasn't an intro to bike racing -- there was
litle explanation of what was going on, little intro to tactics or training. It was all tourism and
history stuff, which was very tangential to the sport. I've seen material that (for me) is boring
but is actually bike racing coverage. Like an explanation of a feedzone or a paceline in some old
Tour de Trump coverage.

Consider - when they have something like the Long Beach Grand Prix you watch an hour of cars passing
by the same three corners time after time after time. And the producers do that because they know
that car racing fans think that is reporting.
Why is it that they would produce bike racing for someone other than the bike racing fans?

Better than my local CBS station that pre-empted the coverage for a Public access quality local
hunting show. The whole show was deer hunters complaining they are not allowed to shoot over
roadways and that beers eat all the deer.

No, some of those Bud Light cans are real nasty. they climb up into trees and swoop down on passing
deer consuming them in just a few moments. Amazing how those AL teeth rip through flesh.

Perhaps it's because there aren't enough bike racing fans watching, so OLN must pay the bills by
making their product attractive to the large number of casual observers.
